CHANGES SINCE 2011.2.0

Hugin has got a vertical feature detection tool for automatic
levelling
of panoramas. Beside this also many bugs have fixed and many general
improvements have been made.

Vertical feature detection tool

Often a panorama, created from several single photos, is not level. In
this case the experienced user adds vertical and horizontal control
points to level the panorama.

With this release Hugin introduces a tool named /linefind/ which
automatically detects vertical features in the photos such as the
edges
of buildings and windows, and assigns vertical control points to them.
This makes it easier than before to level a panorama, in most cases it
works without any intervention.

Other Improvements

* The Fast Preview window can now show composition guides such as
Rule of Thirds and Golden ratio to support an easier composition
of the final panorama.
* The output of High Dynamic Range (HDR) images has been modified to
prevent clipping of the exposure in EXR format images. The
previous versions of Hugin outputted HDR images with absolute
exposure values, now with this 2011.4.0 release, Hugin uses
relative
exposure values. This means that the output Exposure Value (EV) of
the panorama, which can be set in the preview window, has an
influence on the HDR output (as already for normal LDR images) and
should be set to the medium exposure value of the images. If you
set
the output exposure value to zero, the old behavior is restored.
* The batch processor PTBatcherGUI has been extended:
o It is now possible to directly add unaligned projects to the
assistant queue for aligning and control point generation.
o Successfully stitched projects can be automatically removed
from
the queue, this makes the queue management easier.
o If a project was successfully finished by the assistant, it
can
be automatically added to the stitching queue. This now allows
for a fully automatic panorama creation workflow.
* Many more improvements and bug fixes.

UPGRADING

Upgrading from previous versions of Hugin should be seamless. If you
do have
problems with old settings, these can be reset in the Preferences by
clicking
'Load defaults'.

It is strongly recommeded to set the default control point detector to
Hugin's CPFind. It is the only control point generator endorsed by
Hugin.
Third-party generators may be compatible with the plug-in
architecture.

There is a known problem building Hugin with CMake 2.8.5rc2.
Workaround: Upgrade to a newer CMake version.

No matter how many times I click Defaults (or even restart Hugin after
that) I keep getting

" If you see this message then you have upgraded from an earlier
version of Hugin and have no Control Point Detector configured.

Please open the Preferences window and Load Defaults for the
Control Point Detectors setting.

This will enable the new built-in Control Point Detector and
you won't see this message again."

whenever I click Align button in the Assistant.

Ubuntu 11.10, 32bit

What am I doing wrong? :)

Are you going to File -> Preferences -> Control Point Detectors and
clicking 'Load Defaults'?

The preferences are divided into tabs, 'Load Defaults' just resets
preferences that are visible in the current Preferences tab, it
doesn't reset everything.

Thank you all for another great release just in time for the
holidays. Particular thanks to Stefan Peter for making the binary
available via the Hugin PPA and to everybody upstream of those
binaries.
It is unfortunate that without going through the above described
manual procedure, upgrading users don't have access to linefind (great
tool, thanks!).

For similar situations in the future it makes sense to either (a)
check that this is an upgrade and write into the preferences once the
new extra settings; or (b) on first start up show a pop up window to
the user mentioning the manual procedure. I personally would prefer
an automated procedure as in (a), but it would require writing the
version number into a new preference value. Check it on startup
against the version of the binary running and if there is an upgrade,
update the version number in the preference and undertake the other
necessary operations, including asking the user for permission if
changing things like preferred CP generator.

As an aside: the binaries on the Hugin PPA still mention autopano-sift
and autopano-sift-c as suggested packages. This is obsolete and
should be removed IMHO.

Happy Holidays!

I don't agree here: as long as the Debian packages use this suggestion,
we should keep it in, too. I know that autopano-sift-c is patent
encumbered and commercial use requires a license, but it is still in all
the repositories. As long as it is available, it should be available to
interested users.

We have dropped the dependency of hugin to the suggestion mentioned
above, and this should be sufficient in order to prevent installation
and usage of autopano-sift-c by new users.

Happy Holidays

Thanks for the friendly hint. I have dropped the suggestion in Debian
packaging git repository, I will change it in the next upload to
unstable.

I agree with you that 'buntu packages should try to follow upstream
Debian, however I am puzzled how Debian can recommend packages that it
does not distribute:

http://packages.debian.org/search?keywords=autopano&searchon=names&section=all

> I know that autopano-sift-c is patent encumbered

This is not the reason for dropping the suggestion. As you correctly
remarked, this is not a dependency. A suggested package is a package
that the maintainer of the installed package recommends. Can you
recommend autopano*?

I would suggest recommending are LuminanceHDR and Gimp as they are
useful in processing Hugin's output.

I have committed a framework to do just this. It is in huginApp.cpp
around line 250. Currently it crudely displays a pop-up notifying the
user of an upgrade/downgrade with regard to the existing preferences
and mention the manual fix of File -> Preferences -> Load Default on
each tab.

BTW, Davide started working on libhdr which will later be used by
LuminanceHDR.

Great work. I will download this when I have enough capacity
available.
Am so impressed that Hugin has been improved again.

Has anyone built a 64bit OpenSuse or Ubuntu version yet?
When the 64 bit windows build is available, would be a good idea to
note if EXR is supported, otherwise a number of people could be
confused if the improved EXR functionality appears to be broken.

The Ubuntu builds on launchpad
(https://launchpad.net/~hugin/+archive/hugin-builds) are available in
both i386 and amd64 flavors.

Sorry, I can't help with windows. But I never managed to create a usable
EXR image under linux, too. I didn't try very hard, though.

If the CPfind memory issue fixed in this release?

I see that a fix is released according to bugtracker, but there is no
mention about this in the release notes for 2011.4
