Hi all,

We've been working on identifying/mapping opportunities for low-impact solar development, and large parking lots and rooftops are top of the list.  The Microsoft Building Footprints layer, now hosted by ESRI, is a great layer for buildings nation-wide (lower 48 at least).  I've found impervious surface layers based on NLCD and similar-resolution (https://sedac.ciesin.columbia.edu/data/set/ulandsat-gmis-v1) data, but nothing with fine enough scale to meaningfully map large parking lots in the Hudson Valley.  Is anyone aware of a fine-scale impervious surface layer for the HV?  I'd also be interested in somewhat smaller coverages (e.g. single counties) if they exist.

Thanks,
Alex

NYCDEP has a very fine-scale impervious surface layer for their watersheds.  It’s not publicly available, but I think they’re open to data requests.

NYS Clearinghouse has a 1 ft DEM for Columbia and Rensselaer Counties. I use it for verifying georeferenced surveys. I can pick out stone walls with it. It might be adapted for your purpose.

Ulster County has 1m resolution landcover that was created by UVM in 2013 for mapping the Delaware River watershed, but they extended it to cover all of Ulster, which is nice.  https://www.pasda.psu.edu/uci/DataSummary.aspx?dataset=3167

The Chesapeake Bay Conservancy mapped all of that watershed similarly at 2m resolution a while back (also 2013/2014), which covers the Susquehanna portion of NY, but won’t help in the Hudson Valley.

CCAP has 10-meter resolution beta land cover data for NYS... better than typical 30-m data.

Westchester County’s GeoHub portal (https://gis.westchestergov.com/) also has all the parking lots as a layer in their planimetric data that you can download.

You might try asking for planimetric data from the other NY cities/towns/counties you are looking at (I don’t know if any of the others have their planimetrics online or not).

Hi Alex,

You really want the 2013 1m UVM\Delaware LULC data that Dave Richardson mentioned.

Remarkable resolution both spatially and thematically (3 levels of imperv including paved\roofs with overhanging vegetation). You could also easily build a logical spatial model combining zoning and building footprint\address points to further enhance.
