speakers &
panelists

Speakers:
Dr. Jean Lebel
President,
IDRC, Canada
Jean leads the
Centre’s
contributions to
Canada’s
development,
foreign policy,
and global
innovation
efforts. He is
responsible for
significant
funding
partnerships
with Canadian
and foreign
governments,
philanthropic
organisations,
and the private
sector.
Carin
Jämtin
Director-General,
Sida, Sweden
Before being the
Director General
of Sida, she
served as a
member of
parliament in
the Swedish
government, a
Minister for
International
Development
Cooperation and
Secretary
General at the
Olof Palme
International
Center. Carin is
now
responsibility
for implementing
government and
parliament
decisions as
well as for
resolving
overall issues
regarding Sida’s
organisation.
Dominique
Charron (Moderator), Vice-President, Programs and Partnerships,
IDRC, Canada
Prior to her
role as
vice-president,
Dominique was
the director of
IDRC’s
Agriculture and
Environment
program. She
supervised
research focused
on increasing
agricultural
productivity and
food security,
reducing
vulnerability to
climate change,
and protecting
the public
against
infectious
diseases and
non-communicable
diseases. She
will also be
moderating the
panel
Petrarca
Karetji Head,
Pulse Lab
Jakarta, UN
Global Pulse,
Indonesia
Petra has more
than 25 years of
professional
experience,
undertaking a
range of
international
development
industry roles.
He currently
heads up Pulse
Lab Jakarta a
big-data
innovation lab
that is now
emerging as an
analytic
partnership
accelerator for
development and
humanitarian
action.
Alan
AtKisson, Assistant
Director-General and Director, Department of Partnership &
Innovation,
Sida, Sweden
Alan AtKisson
serves as
Assistant
Director-General
of Sida,
the Swedish
International
Development
Cooperation
Agency, where he
leads the
Department of
Partnership and
Innovation. He
has over 30
years of
experience,
working in over
50 countries,
and has advised
numerous
governments,
leading
companies,
global NGOs, and
the United
Nations.

Neema Iyer is an
artist and a
technologist.
She is the
founder and
director of
Pollicy, a civic
technology
organization
based in
Kampala, Uganda.
Pollicy uses
data, design and
technology to
improve how
citizens and
government
engage around
public service
delivery.
Renata
Avila
Renata
Avila, (Guatemalan, 1981)
is a
International
Human Rights
Lawyer and
author, with
more than
fifteen years of
experience
working in
cutting edge
issues related
to technology
and society.
She co-founded
and advises the <A+> Alliance for Inclusive
Algorithms.
Kathleen
Siminyu
Kathleen Siminyu
is an AI
Researcher who
is Regional
Coordinator of
Artificial
Intelligence for
Development
Africa(AI4D
Africa). She has
long running
experience
working with AI
communities on
the African
continent,
including the
Nairobi Women in
Machine Learning
and Data Science
community as
well as with the
Deep Learning
Indaba.
Araba
Sey
Araba Sey is a
Principal
Researcher with
Research ICT
Africa and a
Senior Research
Scientist at the
University of
Washington
Information
School. Her
research
examines the
relationship
between digital
and social
inequality.
Dr.
Joyce
Nakatumba-Nabende
She is a
lecturer in the
Department of
Computer Science
at Makerere
University and
is currently the
head of the
Makerere
Artificial
Intelligence and
Data Science
research
Lab.Joyce leads
a team of
researchers that
carry out
research in the
application of
machine learning
techniques in
solving problems
in the areas of
agriculture and
health and a
large part of
her work focuses
on building
language
resources for
Uganda
languages.
