"There's an undercurrent of racism and discrimination, and not only in Salinas High but in all high schools," said an Alisal High School senior, who introduced herself as Belinda during Tuesday's Salinas Union High School board of trustees meeting.

Later Tuesday night, dozens of parents, students, educators, and community members attended Tuesday's Salinas Union High School District (SUHSD) board meeting. More than 100 people voiced their concerns regarding a group of students who allegedly defaced a Black doll during Salinas High School's jamboree event last week.

SUHSD Superintendent Dan Burns said the consequences for those involved include suspension, removal from extracurricular activities, and mandatory attendance in restorative justice and healing sessions.

Several students claim that the Salinas High School principal and other faculty members have made racially insensitive remarks in the past. Additionally, one Alisal student said that some Salinas High School staff knew about the doll but didn't act until the social media post.

In the meantime, Building Healthy Communities, a local community-based organization supporting engagement and leadership, is launching a countywide racial equity earning to action cohort. Their goal is to battle racial inequities in the county. BHC leaders helped organize this meeting.

On Jan. 11, four students wrapped string around the neck of a dark skinned doll and hung it in a stairwell. The students posted pictures of the doll online, provoking an outcry from parents, students and members of the community.

At last night's meeting people voiced different opinions on how best to move on, while school officials expressed shock at the incident and pledged to do a better job of educating students about the racial context of what happened.

Markham-Cousins has been criticized by some parents because she didn't publicly comment on the incident until five days after it happened. She apologized for the delay, but insisted the school and the district are committed to tackling the issue.

"What I'm here to say is that it no way represents our student body. The Washburn I've experienced is a tightly knit community," Cramer said. "We see each other as fellow human beings, different, but human beings none the less."

Other parents and community members urged Minneapolis school officials to consider teaching more about racial strife in the country's history, so students have a better understanding of why the imagery of a dark skinned doll hung by the neck is disturbing to so many people.

Markham-Counsins says the school will hold more meetings in the near future for students to again voice their opinions on what the school can do to learn from the incident and prevent it from happening again.

I recently purchased a reality baby for my classroom, and it has been an incredible addition to our learning environment. The students absolutely loved it and were genuinely excited to engage with it.

We just ordered the babies this year with grant money. My students LOVE them. I am still learning how to implement them in class. The company is GREAT and helpful! They respond quickly when I needed help!

The RealCare Baby 3 has really been an eye opener for my students! They realized they have to rearrange their whole life to accommodate a baby. The reports that come back from the baby are quite helpful. I love that I can provide quiet time and make other modifications as necessary for each student.

I LOVE the Real Care Babies for my Parenting Class. It is a great life lesson for my students to understand how much care goes into taking care of a baby. Also, the Real Care Babies bring up a lot of great real life discussion questions from my students. My students schedule a weekend to take the baby home and then have to keep track of a journal of the care they provided for baby. When they return the baby, the talk about their experiences with the baby. My Parenting Class is ALWAYS full and I think it is mostly because of the Real Care Baby Simulators. I have also bought the other babies; drug addicted, alcohol fetal, and the shaken baby. Those babies are great for the earlier lessons I teach in Parenting about improper care. I appreciate RealityWorks with providing products that are hands on for the Family and Consumer Science Content.

I love my RealCare Infants and so do my students! They are such an engaging way to get students connecting with an infant or childcare unit. Consistently, my students take their time with the RealCare Infants more seriously than they take any of our other projects throughout the year. They see the connection to their future and want to be prepared!

My students look forward to caring for the Real Care Baby every year. We practice in class until they are ready to take them home for two or three nights if they choose a weekend. It is amazing how quickly they realize how much work an infant is. Almost all of them come back and say that they are NOT ready to become parents. I am so thankful my school has allowed me to use them for over 20 years now. The curriculum that comes with Baby is also high quality.

We upgraded our class set of RealCare babies to the Baby 3 and have unlocked a new teaching tool in doing so. My students have gained a whole new perspective on the challenge of becoming a teen parent in one weekend. I am grateful to have given them this experience!

I am really impressed by how advanced and innovative the RealCare Baby 3 simulator works! Having graduated high school more than ten years ago, I never got to take part in any kind of simulation experience.To-day, I am a team member of a nonprofit organisation whose mission is to help adults and families with mental illness learn and reinforce skills that they may have forgotten. We would be really interested in knowing if you have any resources for materials geared towards this population. I understand most of your materials are primarily aimed at junior/middle school and high school students, but I also think college-aged and new/first-time adult parents who are anxious about bringing a baby into the world could really benefit from this programme, as well!

Over the course of the last school year, we have had close to two dozen students participate in this program. Nothing replaces personal interactions and real-world learning. The understandings and realizations that students had as a result of this experience could not have been replicated in any other way.

Thanks for your interest, Stacey! Our Canadian partner is a great company called Studica. You can learn more by visiting their website here: studica.com/ca/en/realityworks. Thank you, and good luck with your efforts!

I appreciate the value of the Real Care Infant simulators. My students gain valuable experience with the simulators and have enjoyed the opportunity the simulators provide. Our recent purchase of 2 additional babies has increased the time each student has with the baby. Previous purchases included both a car seat and base that is secured into the vehicle but with our recent purchase we only received the car seat, no base. The only thing I would have appreciated was being told that the base would not be included. Excellent educational program for the value.

Thank you for the RealCare Baby Program review. Recently we did change the type of car seats we offer and they no longer have a base as they are for educational purposes only. Your feedback is appreciated and will be shared with our team for future communications.

I have used RealCare 2 plus infant simulators for some years now. Last spring, I was able to trade them in and get even more, along with other materials. I love the new software and tracking improvements.

Kewpie dolls gained popularity as paper cut-outs, and were subsequently manufactured in the 1920's as toy dolls made from bisque. Decades later, Kewpie dolls were still in demand, and they were mass produced from plastic and rubber. Today, the early bisque versions are rare and highly desired by antique doll collectors.

The story of how the Kewpie became Hickman High School's mascot dates back to a basketball game held in December of 1913. The school's secretary owned one of the popular dolls, and placed the Kewpie doll at centre court before the basketball game. Not only did the doll survive the entire game unscathed, but the basketball team won - and since then it has been considered a good luck charm.

Recently, BAM Mascots worked closely with Hickman High School to create a new pair of Kewpie mascots: Mighty Kewp, a sporty and strong looking character, and Mister Kewpie, a dapper Kewpie character in a black business suit.

If you want to create a unique custom-made mascot costume to help your school or organization with branding, student engagement, and add fun to your school events, please contact us today to discuss your mascot idea.

SALINAS, Calif. (KION) KION is learning that three students have been suspended for their involvement in the Black baby doll incident at Salinas High School that has enraged the local community in the last week.

A source familiar with the matter confirms with KION that the three students, two of whom are Hispanic and one African American, are being accused of creating the Black baby doll itself and for creating an Instagram page that circulated crude content involving the doll.

"My initial response is that, yes, that's disappointing to me because several of the kids that we saw on the videos and in the pictures violating the doll, we've heard that nothing has happened to them. And now these three other students that we've never heard of before, we find out that we're suspended," said Yvonne Thomas, the president of the Monterey County NAACP.
