Hi Eric,

I've been using Fiddler for a long long time, but suddenly it won't capture IE traffic any more.

Here are more details:

- It only limits to my computer. All other machines in my company doesn't behave this way.
- It only limits to my IE browser. When Fiddler starts or stops, the traffic from chrome get captured just fine.

Here are my troubleshooting of the issue:

- My IE, and the IE from all other machines in my company, are set with "Automatically detect settings". This is IE's default, when Fiddler is not started.
- When Fiddler is started, I noticed from other normal machines, The "Automatically detect settings" will be disabled and IE will (automatically) use the proxy settings of 127.0.0.1:8888.  (From IE Tools -> Internet Options -> Connections tab -> LAN Settings -> Advanced), There will be 127.0.0.1 port:8888 for HTTP and for FTP).
- However, on my computer when Fiddler is started, Neither the "Automatically detect settings", nor the "Use proxy" option is selected and proxy settings (in Advanced) is blank.

What's wrong with my computer? How to fix it? My IE is the latest IE10 under Win7.

Thanks

Click Help > Troubleshoot and try again. I assume the IE traffic doesn't appear?

There are two possibilities: 1> You've hit a bug in IE/WinINET's proxy change code, or 2> You've got some other software (malware or security software or management software) or policy that is interfering with the proxy settings.

If you try to set the proxy in IE to 127.0.0.1:8888 manually using the UI in question, then click "Ok", does the change "stick" when you reopen the dialog?

That's right, Eric. Then I realized that one change I made previously was to change default browser from IE to chrome, so I changed it back to IE. After that, the traffic that going through the Troubleshoot cgi showed up in IE, but no any IE traffic show up any more afterwards.

There are two possibilities: 1> You've hit a bug in IE/WinINET's proxy change code,

It must be strictly limited to IE, as my chrome works just fine.

or 2> You've got some other software (malware or security software or management software) or policy that is interfering with the proxy settings.

Giving that my chrome works just fine, this seems unlikely as well.

- Yes,  the change "sticks", when I reopen the dialog, and even after I close IE and reopen.
- Stop capturing in Fiddler, IE can change the proxy back to automatic. However,
- Re-enable capturing again, IE cannot change the the proxy back. Still get blank for everything.

So far every evident seems to be pointing to IE. Let me try to reinstall it...

One more thing to add, I can see three "Fiddler Echo Service" under Alternate hostname test when the troubleshoot cgi page is showed up in chrome, but when in IE, all three sub-windows shows errors.

I've gone through the list in control pannel > program several times, but seems IE is not there. I.e., there is no option to reinstall IE.

I've found and done the IE re-installation, and rebooted my machine as well. but the problem remains exactly the same.

Problems with IE wouldn't typically manifest in Chrome, as they don't share a network stack.

What "errors" specifically do you see in "All three subwindows"?

When you say "Latest IE10 for Windows 7" do you mean IE11?

When you manually set the proxy in IE to 127.0.0.1:8888 are you seeing IE's traffic in Fiddler at that time?
