I'm having trouble accessing external sites when Fiddler is running
(always get a 502). I have no trouble using it locally or for
intranet sites. I do have company proxy that is manually configured
in IE which it appears Fiddler picks up, as I can see it when clicking
"Show Gateway Info" in the Fiddler options, but when looking at the
'About Fiddler' screen the Gateway shows "No Gateway". I'm using the
latest beta 2.2.4.5 and have "Chain to upstream gateway proxy" checked
off. Any help would be appreciated

When Fiddler isn't running, what are the exact settings for your
upstream proxy server?

What's the exact text of the 502 error message?

I have the address of the internal proxy server and port 8080 setup
with it to bypass for localhost and 127.0.0.1. Automatically detect
settings and use automatic configuration script are diabled.

Here is the response I get just when Fiddler starts and tries to check
for an updated version.

HTTP/1.1 502 Fiddler - Connection Failed
Content-Type: text/html
Connection: close
Timestamp: 08:12:45:8984

[Fiddler] Connection to www.fiddler2.com failed.<BR>Exception Text: A
connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly
respond after a period of time, or established connection failed
because connected host has failed to
respond

This message indicates that Fiddler isn't chaining to your upstream
proxy server, which is likely why the connection is failing. Inside
Fiddler's Tools / Fiddler Options / Connections, is the "Chain to
upstream proxy" set?

Do you have any rules which set bBypassGateway = true?

Yeah, I have Fiddler set to act as system proxy on startup and chain
to upstream gateway proxy without any bypasses for IE and monitor all
connections on port 8080. I haven't configured any custom rules
within Fiddler.

Then there's no logical explanation for the behavior you see, as that
error message will not be shown in the case you describe. Please send
me a .SAZ capture demonstrating the problem (ericlaw at microsoft).

thanks.

Not sure why, but if I put in the auto config script address and don't
use the proxy server settings in IE it works. When I use the proxy
server settings in IE I can browse sites just fine except for when I
turn the capture on in Fiddler.

Anyway, thanks for the replies, but I guess for now I'll stick with
the config script.
