Hello,

Is there a way to completely disable all update-related popups during startup?  I finally got tired of the "Good news" popup and went to the tools menu today to uncheck "check for updates on startups".

Unfortunately, all that did is that I now have a different popup that also occurs every time I launch.

  What's that smell?
  ---------------------------
Sorry to bother you, but this version of Fiddler is now quite outdated.
Can we check for a new version real quick?
  ---------------------------
  Yes   No
  ---------------------------

Obviously, this is unhelpful.  Is there another setting or a registry key I can use to disable all popups on launch?

According to Help->About, I'm running

 Fiddler Web Debugger (v2.4.2.6)
 Built: Monday, January 21, 2013

Thanks,

Daniel

PS: I'm not looking to update.

>"I'm using a buggy version of Fiddler that is 11 months old, and don't want reminders of that an improved version is available."

May I ask why not? I'm very interested in understanding why you might prefer not to have bugfixes, performance improvements, and new capabilities.

As to your question, it has been asked before; you can read that post if you must, but I really do encourage you to use the current version.

Hi Eric,

Thanks for your prompt response.  I'll try this solution later in the week.  The reasoning for not wanting to update is as follows:

a) I am completely, 100%, without reservations, satisfied with the buggy, 11 month old version that I'm using.  All the features that I have ever used are present; it is fast, familiar, reliable and in general a pleasure to work with.

b) I tried updating to the new version and I started seeing hangs, crashes and other undesirable behavior from time to time.  I don't know what the cause is, because frankly I don't have the time and the inclination to debug into it, all I know is that it happened twice, on two separate machines and months apart.  After the second time, I decided to stay put with my existing version, which never caused any trouble, and only update when I run into a major problem that is specific to the old version.

Your message is extraordinarily frustrating.

First off, the new version is simply better, in every way, than the old version.

Secondly, even if you were having a problem, by failing to report it and give an opportunity for me to investigate it, you're robbing the product of improvement.

I don't ask a lot of users of Fiddler (it is free, after all) but providing feedback is the one thing I do ask.

Here's why this is annoying:

When I want to use Fiddler, I usually want to use it_now_. If I let it update itself, I need to wait several minutes (and yes, that is too long). What it should really have, is a way to tell the updater to "just update silently whenever you need to, without me knowing about it - unless it's gonna be a major update that will break shit". It's the same issue as Windows has that caused me to turn off literally everything that is related to updates, otherwise it will keep turning on my PC at night (or rather, waking it up from sleep), and nagging me about restarts. No thanks, either it will get a one time large update from me once every half a year when it's suitable, or it'll do updates silently without me having to know about it, in the background. Like OSX!
