is there a way to prevent fiddler from translating requests from
localhost into 127.0.0.1 in reverse proxy mode? I have a local
application I am trying to trace but it will not accept 127.0.0.1 as a
host name.

Wouldn't replacing 127.0.0.1 with “ipv4.fiddler” or “ipv6.fiddler” work?  Or is that IP different from "localhost"??

Generally, I would discourage the creation of applications that reject
the loopback addresses and require fixed strings, as this tends to
result in all sorts of problems.

Nonetheless, I've updated Fiddler to allow configuration of the
hostname used in ReverseProxyMode; by default, it now uses
"localhost", but you can edit the ReverseProxyHostname registry string
to anything you'd like.

In response to the question about using ipv4.fiddler and
ipv6.fiddler-- no, that explicitly will not work, as these immediately
translate into the appropriate IP-literal forms. Those "magic"
addresses are solely designed to bypass the "bypass proxy for local IP
literals" feature that exists in many browsers and HTTP stacks.
