Dear Colleagues,

 

First let us wish you a healthy, prosperous 2018 in which we can achieve the goal to increase access everywhere to appropriate and good quality medical technologies to support Universal Health Coverage and the Sustainable Development Goals in the near future.

 

2017 key health  issues

You can read about the main health achievements from 2017, although there is no specific on medical devices, our technologies were used to achieve many of these outcomes.

 

2018

 

  1. Governing Bodies of WHO: The Executive Board (EB) meeting of WHO  will take place 22-27 January 2018 and almost all sessions are available live webcast.  If you work in the government of your country, please make sure that your Ministers or representatives will be providing comments to the following items in the agenda, which are very related to our work:


a. EB142/3, Draft thirteenth general programme of work 2019–2023, “Promote health, keep the world safe, serve the vulnerable”

b. EB142/9, Public health preparedness and response, WHO’s work in health emergencies
c. EB142/10, Public health preparedness and response, Implementation of the International Health Regulations (2005)
d. EB142/12, Health, environment and climate change 
e. EB142/15, Preparation for the third High-level Meeting of the General Assembly on the Prevention and Control of Non-communicable Diseases, to be held in 2018
g. EB142/20, mHealth, Use of appropriate digital technologies for public health
h. EB142/21, Improving access to assistive technology

 

  1. WHO is now working towards defining the characteristics of a classification, coding and nomenclature of medical devices, which as you know,  is the backbone for many of our activities to support better access, for tracking and naming medical devices in:  manufacturing, regulation, procurement, and management ( supply chain, inventories, maintenance, post-market surveillance and decommissioning) and the link to UDI. You can read more on our nomenclature website..

ACTION: We welcome your input and thus invite you to respond to a survey of the use-cases and needs of nomenclature at: https://extranet.who.int/dataform/788481 before 31st of January, 2018. Feel free to send the survey to colleagues.

 

  1. WHO work on Technical specifications and guidance of use of :

 

  1. Oxygen supply systems: As you might know, many hospitals and clinics world-wide do not have oxygen, which is indispensable for treating Pneumonia, perform surgical interventions and support patients in emergencies, trauma, chronic pulmonary diseases, among other diseases. WHO is working along with UNICEF supported by the Gates Foundation in increasing access to oxygen and systems to delivery oxygen.  If interested in this topic, please send email to medical...@who.int. A post for a consultant  in UNICEF to support this work in 2018:

Consultancy Title:  Technical Consultant (Oxygen Therapy),  11.5 months

  1. Other essential devices projects will follow shortly: blood pressure meters, glucometers, x ray and ultrasound .
