Am I the only speaker coming from outside of Austin? Is there any recommended hotels, or better, one sponsoring the conference with a discount or something?

The La Quinta Inn on Oltorf is your best bet: http://www.lq.com/lq/properties/propertyProfile.do?propId=522

They are not "sponsoring," but the rate is still reasonable.

I'm not staying at this hotel, this time, but I have stayed at the
Wyndham Garden.

http://www.hotels.com/hotel/details.html?pa=10&pn=1&ps=10&tab=description&destinationId=1644276&hotelId=107035&arrivalDate=10-07-11&departureDate=10-08-11&rooms[0].numberOfAdults=2&roomno=1&validate=false&previousDateful=false&reviewOrder=date_newest_first#maps

This hotel is literally next to St. Edwards, walking distance/not
walking friendly IMO. It is currently priced at $116 a night. If you
want to be close to the conference....stay here.

I stayed at this hotel once before I moved here: http://www.austexhotel.com.  Decent place, at I35 and Oltorf, a quick drive to St. Ed's.

I did a quick rate check for checking on on Friday and checking out on Sunday, rates started around $99/night.

Thanks guys, I was already going to go with La Quinta - they are decent, cheap, have free wifi, and breakfast.

So I'm the only one from out of town then?

No. Several other folks will be staying at the La Quinta.
