SoI just joined up with the drumline on snare and I've never really played with tradtitional grip before. My first practice with the line went really well, and I already am starting to develop a callus on my ring finger. The problem is that as of now its a wide open sore and it hurts like a sonofabitch to play with and i have a rehearsal tomorrow. What can you recommend to make it less painful to play and let my finger keep healing at the same time?

Make sure that your wrist is rolling, more than your arm raising when you lift the stick. I'm not exactly sure what to tell you about tomorrow, but you need to make sure that when you're holding the stick, that your Thumb is ON TOP (in other words, when you look straight down at your hand while holding it in the traditional grip - you are looking directly at your thumb nail-it's not "rolled over" to the side....your palm should NOT be facing up...which is a mistake that 95% of the drummers playing Traditional grip made....I know, becauseI did it and I played that way for several years until I found out about the moeller technique. If you use the moeller technique, there should be less" rubbing of the stick on your ring finger...because the stick will be dropping down on your finger, and not rubbing between your ring and middle finger (if your hand is palm up the stick tends to "slide" between the two fingers.)

If you will do a seach for "Jim Chapin" or Moeller Technique...somewhere in here I posted a link to a file online that shows proper Moeller technique by Jim Chapin - who was Moeller's "Premier" student.
