Bem, não sei se o que você está fazendo no momento pede conversao de
real pra inteiro, existe algumas funções prontas pra isso,
por exemplo:

Porém, tenho um grau de certeza bem grande que a parte que você está
no livro não pede absolutamente nada disso, então acho que você está
indo pelo caminho errado.
