I've recently cut out cable TV. An indoor antenna doesn't quite cut it
except for two groups of channels, so I've finally gotten a real
antenna and installed it in the attic. Now I can get all the Huntsville
stations except WAFF (48). No signal at all!

AntennaWeb says we're 8 miles away and the 48 tower is about 14-15
degrees off the rest. I've got the antenna pointed in that general
direction, but haven't pointed it precisely yet. Beyond doing that, any
tips?

I saw some past discussions about 48 being under-powered compared to the
rest of the stations, but they were a few years old and I think I saw
promises of a power increase. Has that been done yet?

Are there any obstructions between you and the antenna, including trees?
Without clear line-of-sight, OTA isn't very reliable.

Even with a decent path, the stations come and go. 54 is the most
unreliable for me, followed by 48 and 25. 19 is pretty stable, 31 nearly
as good.

There are some trees in between me and Monte Santo. Unfortunately,
they're not mine, so I can't do anything about them. I haven't yet
taken the time to try fine tuning the antennas direction, but I've had
almost no problems with 19, 25, 31, and 54.

I can recommend emailing the station. A few years ago we had
a successful exchange that referred me to the station signal
mechanic. If they are overshooting you they want to know.

When the Pens are out of the fight for the cup, I might be
considering the change.

Actually, if describing what you want to see happen without providing any spe-
cific policies to get us there constitutes a plan, I can easily come up with a
one-point plan that trumps Mr. Romney any day. Here it is: Every American will
have a good job with good wages. Also, a blissfully happy marriage. And a pony.

WAY out in Hartselle (30 miles from Huntsville antennas), with only
cheap, indoor "rabbit ears", I have to choose between 15-25 and 48. I
can never pickup both at the same time.

15 is weak, but usable if I tweek everything; dipole element length,
dipole element position, foil reflector (almost opposite direction), and
"knob" selection.

19 is weak, but usable with a few tweeks.

25 is weaker, but usable with the knob position changed 2 clicks.

31 is okay.

48 is so weak that I have to sacrifice 15 and 25 to pull it in.

54 is ALWAYS strong, no matter what!

What kind of antenna are you using?

I got an initial response, but no follow-up. Will have to ping them
again.

I believe it's one of these:
http://www.walmart.com/ip/GE-Attic-Mount-Antenna/20976617

If that's not it, it looks very, very similar to that. My house is
only about seven miles from the WAFF transmitter. I've used the
coordinates I found online for the tower and my smartphone's GPS to
confirm my antenna is pointed (something very close to) directly at
it.

I just recently cut the cord and I cannot get 48. I only have indoor antennas, but get everything else just fine. This thread was started years ago, I can believe that NBC affiliate waff 48 still hasn't got with the times. Channel 25 comes in the best. I live in Athens City over by Hwy 31. I've not yet gotten an outdoor antenna, but it's going to be the next step I'm guessing.

WAFF seems to be the problem child of all broadcast channels emanating out of Huntsville. Radiating less than half of their licenced output, it seems the channel owners are pandering to the cable feeds rather than OTA cable cutters. Knowing that the channel offered themselves up for the frequency auction doesn't speak well for any improvement in signal quality. Take the money and run. Based on your location, I would suggest a yagi type antenna mounted as high as possible outdoors. It's highly directional and using the signal strength meter on your TV you can zero in on the best path.
If you're handy, check out building a Gray-Hoverman uhf antenna. Cor less than twenty dollars, it out performs many commercial products and can give you solid info on direction and issues prior to shelling out high dollars for an antenna system that might not benefit you.I built a GH and mounted it my attic. It powers three TV's plus a Table recorder. It didn't solve my 48 issues, but reduced the frequency of the channel tiling out and being unwatchable.

I'm 60 miles (straight line) west of the Huntsville towers. I use a GE 33692 Pro Attic-mount Passive Indoor Antenna and have it mounted in the attic of a one story house. There is a patch of very large trees 100-300 feet away. Using a Channel Master amp, I get about 20 stations total. All of the Huntsville stations are clear as a bell (19, 31, 54), but WAFF 48 is not even available to pixilate. It's just snow.

Well, I have an update. I just tried 48-1, 48-2 and 48-3 tonight and they are coming in clear. A weak signal from the strength bar on my TV but nonetheless, no pixelation. I'm watching the Olympics OTA instead of streaming.

I live in downtown Huntsville so am very close but can almost never get WAFF. I've tried 3 different antennas. I'm sure they're overshooting me given their broadcast tower location and weak signal. I've talked to several other neighbors and they don't get it either so we all just don't watch it. I have an AppleTV and I can stream NBC shows on the NBC app so I can get most everything but their commercials ;)
