What's the best way to drive to Orlando FL from Huntsville. Time and
good roads is better to be than actual mileage. Google Maps and
Mapquest come up with several options.

I go over to Atlanta and then take I-75 to the Florida Turnpike.
The following link gets you to I-75 in a little over 2 hours and
I-285 in 3 hrs.

Very picturesque and relaxing; lots of elevation changes.

The time of day/traffic pattern dictates whether I take I-75 through
Atlanta or I-285 around.

Note that Georgia has a super-speeder law now. 15 over on a 2-lane
or 25 over on a 4-lane tacks on a few hundred dollars extra penalty.

We've taken that route to Atlanta before but is it the best way if traveling to Orlando? My hub wants to stay on main roads to make better time.

Both MapQuest and Bing Maps say the Ft. Payne/Rome/I-75 route is the
best/fastest. It's 17 miles longer than the shortest route, but is
nearly an hour less time. You won't go wrong with either the Mentone
or Ft. Payne routes; the time difference is minor. Roads are slightly
better on Ft. Payne route.

What does US 280 from Birmingham through Phenix City travel like?
If that's been reworked in the intervening 15 years I could take that
to I-75. Coming back from spring break/training back then, the
Georgia portion traveled like an interstate because they eliminated
intersections. I was happy to not be on an interstate around Atlanta
or trying out foggy roads this side of Adairsville.

The only time I've driven that I went I-65 to Montgomery, got on US-231
to I-10 to I-75 to Florida's Turnpike. I drive to Atlanta all the time,
but avoiding that traffic was worth it to me. US-231 was long stretches
of divided highway in the country with no traffic. There is a little
bypass around downtown Dothan that you do want to take (I think it used
to be called "Business 231", but I think they've dropped those names).

I don't speak for anybody but myself - that's enough trouble.

I recommend T.J.'s route over the mountains to I75, though I've done it
quicker than that ;-)

I can't see how to beat the following:

There may be a call for a rally. I think that it took me 11 hours to get from
Bradenton to I-75 & US 280. AirTran sounds good after that. Florida could have

Yes that's the shortest route in mileage. But nearly an hour longer
in time than the Atlanta route.

All the Google routes are longer than the above in time and dragging the route
through Summerville is longer still. Google prefers Arab, Gadsden and I-20.
210 mi, 3 hours 51 mins I-20 E
190 mi, 3 hours 53 mins I-75 S
240 mi, 3 hours 58 mins I-65 S and I-20 E

Where are the nice places to stretch and good scenery?

Atlanta has the CNN Center.
