I've been thinking off and on over the past few years of giving a
little of my time to the community. I'm now resolved to do it but I
really don't know where to start. Anyone know of places in need of
volunteers? Is there a one-stop-shop where one can look at volunteer
opportunities in the community?

I'm thinking of heading down to the closest Red Cross office and
seeing what they got.

Cool. In addition to helping others, I have found volunteering to be very
personally rewarding. You will be surprised at the interesting people you
will meet, the unexpected perks, and the "free" educational opportunities
you will receive.

One of the rewards of volunteerism is that there are so many "jobs"
available that you can have your pick. I hand picked the things that I
thought I'd like to do professionally, but was neither trained nor employed
to do.

Then, the next thing you know I have OJT. I switch from SAHM to WAHM earning
a regular chunk o' change.

So, I might suggest thinking of something for which you'd like to test your
skills or a cause for which you hope to become more educated. Pick your
show/project. Skip the fray and the politics. You' ll amaze yourself.

Another opportunity is in the local school system. Also, engineers are
really needed for the FIRST Robotics programs. Lots of hours, the hardest
fun you'll ever had, need a lead programmer, pnumatics, cad design...

It might be the most boring thing you ever do (if you're lucky), but
if your neighborhood has a Community Watch, they can always use
another set of eyes.
