Beth :)

To enjoy life every day and try not to have any regrets
over "if only I had ..."
(I contrast this with my posted quest a year ago which
was something about "survive with a shred of self confidence left")
> (3) What is your favorite color?
Blue to blue-green. I especially like 501nm even though
it's more on the greenish blue side. :)
(was that nerdy enough?)
> (4) What CD's, tapes, albums, 8-tracks have you listened to this week?
The Snake Doctor's CD is one of the few that isn't still packed
in a box somewhere. I've been listening to public radio a lot
lately (less classical music on the NPR station here than in Hsv)
> (5) Is coffee a food group? What's *your* food pyramid look like?
I don't like coffee. I do like tea a lot! Both hot & iced.
My food "pyramid" includes black olives, salsa, Thai & Indian
food, pizza, sushi, and yogurt.
> (6) What's the best TV show on now? Of all time?
All time? Maybe M*A*S*H ...
On now I like Law & Order and the "Brit Coms" on Public TV
(Red Dwarf, Are You Being Served, etc.)
> (7) Alabama or Auburn (or Tenn. or Vandy...)?
Don't care... How about GO Chargers! (UAH Hockey!!)
> (8) Do you have any pets? What kind?
> (dust bunnies don't count unless they're ambulatory)
I have a 19 month old monkeydog. To understand the "breed,"
you'd have to meet him. :) He's the light-o-my-life.
> (9) Do you have any pet peeves?
> (e.g. turn indicators, toilet seats, gum snapping, etc.)
Lit cigarette butts thrown out of the car in front of me at night.
The darn things bouncing around leave neon-like impressions on
your retina.
> (10) What other newsgroups do you read?

All of the hsv.* ones, several of the boulder.* ones,
sci.optics, rec.sport.swimming, soc.culture.scottish, etc.

> where would it be?
Right where I live right now: Boulder, Colorado. :)
> (12) Spit or swallow?
I don't drink wine.
> (13) Which hsv.general/nash.general poster do you most want to meet?
> (either for positive reasons or to punch them out...)
I'd like to meet Travis. In the words of my Mom,
"He sounds like quite a character!"
> (14) Who would you like to see as US President?
Someone boring, moderate, and lacking a libido.
I really liked Liddy Dole until she put on the
"Stepford Candidate's Wife" act in '96. :(
> (15) If *you* were President, what's the *first* thing you'd change?
I'd make the entire Congress wear beanies with a propeller on top,
so they wouldn't take themselves so seriously.
> (16) Last *good* movie you saw was? How about a *lousy* one?
I haven't seen a movie in a theatre for over a year.
I guess the next "good" one I'll see will be "The Phantom Menace."
The next "bad" one will probably be the South Park movie.
> (17) What do you like best about where you live?
The scenery is wonderful, and the climate it a bit more temperate
than Huntsville. Most of all, the fact I'm living here means I'm
DONE with grad. school. :D
> (18) Who pays when you go out on a date?
We usually alternate... which reminds me that it's *my* turn...
> (19) What's your favorite farm animal?
Dogs, horses... but it's not a farm without cows in the field!
> (20) Read any good books lately?
Lynda LaPlante, "Cold Blood" -- she wrote the Prime Suspect movies.
> (21) What's the best restaurant in Huntsville/Nashville?
I really like Thai Garden in Huntsville for a combination
of good food, nice atmosphere, and pleasant people.
High up there are Santa Fe Grill, Bandito Burrito, and
Carribean House (called Ginger's now I think).

Take Buster for walks to the park, hike, swim, read,
garden, call friends on the phone, surf the 'Net, and read Usenet.

"Green Party", "Moderate Party," "Y2K Stinks Party"
> (25) My dream job is ___________
The one I have now which I wanted for 3+ years. :)
See, dreams *do* come true!
> (26) Best natural wonder in the region?
> (like mountains, caves, waterfalls, etc.)
In Hsv? I like Monte Sano SP especially when there's
enough water flowing to make the waterfalls run.
I also like Smith Lake which is in Cullman county.
Here in Boulder, we're right up next to the Rocky Mountain
foothills, and there are a pile of big & spectacular rocks
in front called the Flatirons -- just *amazing*.
> (27) The US's best ally is?
Whoever needs our money and/or military support the most
at the moment.
> (28) Who do you like in the NHL or NBA playoffs?
Wha? Oh, I think the Colorado Avalanche is playing in something...
I like baseball better.
> (29) Who's in your killfile? :(
I don't have one set up, but I don't read posts from
a few people any more. :(
> (30) How much *should* we pay in taxes?
Enough?
> (31) What do you drive?
Same ole '88 Honda Civic hatchback. It needs to be adjusted
for altitude before I can get the emissions test done...
> (32) What's the first computer you ever used?

> cards!)
TRS-80 on both counts. I've used PDP-11 and all sorts of clunky
old crap which lurks in physics labs to this day. I fondly remember
the VAX computer we used up until 2 years ago...
> (33) Complete this sentence: "If we outlaw guns, _________"
"... then everyone with a gun is an outlaw."
(No, that's not right...)
> (34) Favorite beer, wine, pop, etc.?
I don't do the first 2 and have reduced my consumption
the third, but I still like iced tea and can appreciate
an occasional A & W Root Beer. :)
> (35) What's the silliest name of an elected official you've ever seen?

Fob.
> (36) What do you collect? (coins, stamps, comics, weird looks...)
Dog hair in drifts across the hardwood floors.
It's pretty icky.
> (36) Where's your favorite fishin' hole?
I don't fish, but I liked walking over to the UAH
duck pond and looking at the baby ducks.
> (37) If you could have a "superpower," what would it be?

The power of flight.
> (38) Do you have any favorite pithy quotes? (or .sigs?)
Saw on another group:
"Proud Conspiracies Member: IJC, Vast Right-Wing,
Hiramite, Cabalistic, Circuit Mayflower & Y2K
(didn't think all those programs got screwed up all
by themselves, did you?)"
> (39) ... lame "pick up" lines?
"You have a nice ass. I like them big."
> (40) You might be a REDNECK if.....

Red White & Blue beer, some ammo, live bait, and a

in your parents' basement where you live between
sci fi conventions.
> (42) What do you do when you're really, really bored?
> (like, make up new threads? :)
I haven't had time to be bored for at least 3 months now. :)
> (43) What is guaranteed to make you fall asleep?
A 3 hour hike with a hyperactive dog who wants to chase
everything he sees (squirrels, deer, other dogs) if only
I'd let go of the leash!
> (44) Why do you post to this newsgroup?
It's fun and keeps me in touch with Hsv & the nice
'NetFolks I'm met thru hsv.general.

Probably some health conditions.

The exit gate -- I don't like rides much. :\

Hmmm.... a tie, I think. Motorola D2 trainer (machine language), Timex
Sinclair (BASIC) and IBM 360, via hollerith cards (last engineering class to
do so, the punch cards were replaced the next year).

Naw, I've seen far sillier ones.
As much as I'm repulsed by smoking (in general, tobacco use) and littering,
particularly something like fiberglass which isn't biodegradable within my
lifetime, I think that bouncing burning cigarette butts at night are really
cool looking.
But I'd still like to strangle the jerk who threw it out the window.

Caffeine is a blessing and a curse. I am learning to like more healthy
foods, though (much to my waistline's chagrin) I still *love* fatty
foods and beer.

Lab mix (Brenna) and six aquariums. I am vaguely aware of two cats
living in the house.
> (9) Do you have any pet peeves?
> (e.g. turn indicators, toilet seats, gum snapping, etc.)
Arrogance. People who don't turn the windshield wipers off before
shutting off the ignition. People who install white light bulbs in
automotive applications that require amber ones (example: Taurus front
turn signals). People who write "your" when they mean "you're." That
whole shorts over sweats thing. Blue laws. Nuts in the brownies.
People who don't resign hopelessly lost chess positions. "Cybertalk"
(ne1=anyone, etc.) People who assume that "Republican" translates to
"heartless bastard." Miatas with automatic transmissions.

I don't care much for wine, but when I do have it, I swallow it.
> (13) Which hsv.general/nash.general poster do you most want to meet?
> (either for positive reasons or to punch them out...)
I can honestly say that I have no burning curiosities about any
hsv.general poster at the moment. However, I will say for the benefit
of others:
You must meet Dan Harper to appreciate him fully. He really is an
incredibly nice guy.
Carol Farquhar is the most feline hsv.general poster.
Beth Sornsin has done more to preserve harmony in hsv.general than any
single poster of the last five years.
Denise Panter is one of the kindest souls I've ever encountered--on
usenet or otherwise.
T.J. Higgins shares my loves of loud rock 'n' roll and problematic cars,
so he's definitely one of the good guys.
Gary Heston is a walking home improvement encyclopedia, and he hasn't
steered me wrong yet.
I can't recall ever having a problem with Greg Bacon's politics.
It has given me a large amount of pleasure to know, work with, and goof
off with Nina Donath.
Paul Robichaux is a great guy, and he's probably more of a mentor to me
than he realizes.
I miss Leona Freeman Tiller and wish she would come back.
Mike Wixson was one of the smartest, most sensitive people I ever met,
and he played chess with a swindling flair that is not at all common.
His favorite beer was Mackeson Triple Stout, but I won't hold that
against him.
Eve Blair's entire face lights up when she smiles.
I like that I'm able to tap Ken Haynes' life experiences once in awhile.
> (14) Who would you like to see as US President?
Christine Todd Whitman. Of the current candidates, I go back and forth
between Dole and Bush. If a primary were held tomorrow, I'd probably
choose the former.
> (15) If *you* were President, what's the *first* thing you'd change?
Instead of "Hail to the Chief," I would have "God of Thunder" by Kiss

> (16) Last *good* movie you saw was? How about a *lousy* one?
I haven't watched any movies in quite some time, now that I think about
it. Recently rented "There's Something About Mary," and it was okay,
but a bit sillier than I was expecting.

Finished "The Long Walk" by Stephen King (writing as Richard Bachman)
this weekend. It was okay, I guess. Currently reading "Left Behind" by
Tim Lahaye (sp?), the first book in a series that dramatizes the book of
Revelation. I like it so far. I reread 1984 by George Orwell for
perhaps the twentieth time earlier this year.

Honestly, I have not been really, really bored since I was perhaps 10
years old.
> (43) What is guaranteed to make you fall asleep?
Snuggling with my wife late at night during a steady rain. Brothers and
sisters, that is peace.
> (44) Why do you post to this newsgroup?
Because I enjoy the vast majority of the people here. Because I like to
challenge my beliefs.

I wouldn't be a smoker. (Check with me sometime during the third
quarter this year. I'm getting my nerve up.)

Roller coasters, though I did have a great time on a reverse bungee last
year.
> (47) What's your weirdest habit? How about any of your co-worker's?
I have to set things down on the coffee table at right angles. I *have*
to.
I have a co-worker whose laugh approaches 100 dB.

An authority is a person who can tell you more about something than you really

gbacon. Why are you discriminating against CB handles? :-)
: (2) What is your quest?
My quest is to collect as many experiences as possible.
: (3) What is your favorite color?
Blue.
: (4) What CD's, tapes, albums, 8-tracks have you listened to this week?
Hmm.. 10k Maniacs Unplugged, Lynyrd Skynyrd Essentials, Wyclef's Carnival,
Jimmy Buffett's Songs You Know By Heart.
: (5) Is coffee a food group? What's *your* food pyramid look like?
Nope. My pyramid looks like a big quivering glob of grease. :-(
: (6) What's the best TV show on now? Of all time?
Tough to say. It's all garbage.
: (7) Alabama or Auburn (or Tenn. or Vandy...)?
Roll Tide!

: (dust bunnies don't count unless they're ambulatory)
Nope.
: (9) Do you have any pet peeves?
: (e.g. turn indicators, toilet seats, gum snapping, etc.)
Bad quoting in email and Usenet. C'mon, people, we read left to right
and top to bottom. What's the point of including an entire quoted
thread *below* a message? Interleave or die!
Garbage software (most recently, Microsoft email clients). Software
that bogotically breaks lines and fargles the quoting. Software that
gives completely unhelpful error messages. Mail clients and news
readers that send fscking HTML-encoded messages.
The use of email as a count noun, as in "I sent an email".
People who omit the trailing slash on published URLs, thereby forcing
two HTTP transactions instead of one for each time someone follows
the link. It's annoying when you let people know that their URL is
broken and non-compliant, and they turn around and say "but it works
with my browser--maybe you need a more modern one". *sigh*
The incessant editorialization on Slashdot headlines.
Gosh, I must be grumpy this morning. :-)

N/A.
: (13) Which hsv.general/nash.general poster do you most want to meet?

Dan Harper, just because I haven't yet. Paul Robichaux, so I can

: (14) Who would you like to see as US President?
Someone with good business sense. Steve Forbes would be okay, but he's
too weenie. I'd like to see someone take office and cut off or at least
severely reduce all the bullshit foreign aid (as long as that person
isn't Pat Buchanan). We have enough hungry mouths to feed right here
at home.
: (15) If *you* were President, what's the *first* thing you'd change?
I'd cut or severely reduce foreign aid.
: (16) Last *good* movie you saw was? How about a *lousy* one?
"The Matrix" was pretty good, despite starring Keanu. It seems like
most of the movies I've seen lately are really good up to the end.
"As Good As It Gets" springs to mind as an example as does "Great
Expectations".
: (17) What do you like best about where you live?

Ourselves. We can only depend on people to stab us in the back. We're
the last superpower, and people covet our position. When you're on top,
everyone is gunning for you.
: (28) Who do you like in the NHL or NBA playoffs?
I don't really have a team in the NHL playoffs. I'd like to see the
Kings put the Jazz out because I despise Malone and Stockton. I also
like watching Jason Williams play. Pat Riley is my fraternity brother,
so I'd like to see the Heat do well. I like the Lakers too, but I think
the champs are going to be either the Knicks or the Heat.

elimination should show us their sacs and put up "This home is a
gun-free zone" signs in their front yards. Gun control may be nice on

Still, I don't think gun control advocates fully grasp the logical

>Have you ever dropped your deck?
I used to work graveyard shift in a computer lab in Bldg 4663 on
Redstone Arsenal. Every morning people would come to the window and
pick up their jobs from the night before. One time a guy submitted
this huge deck of cards in a big metal tray. The next morning as I
was carrying it very loosely over to the window, you guessed it, I
dropped it. Right in front of him. Cards were everywhere. Oops,
talk about embarrassing. I asked him if he had a listing of the
cards, and he replied witha curt "yep". I asked if he wanted me to
help him put them back in order, and he replied with a curt "nope",
took his cards, and left.

Are you a King fan, Bo? What other stuff have you read of his by
Bachman? "Rage" is the best written, I believe, but "The Long Walk"

I've read the "Left Behind" series through to the current Apolyon.

Back when I was working on my first tech degree, a couple of wiseguys got
the bright idea to crazy glue two razor blades in the output of the card
reader.... at the point where the pinch rollers still have the card before
it spits it out into the output bin. They were counting on our Fortran class
being in the lab that day. Most of our programs were fairly small, 40 to 100
cards at most. Well, due to a system foul up the night before, the seniors
were able to get the lab times swapped with ours so that they could run
their COBOL jobs through (read card decks of up to 300-400 cards.) Two jobs
made it through before the problem was noticed. The guys were expelled over
it. Even the dean had to admit that it *would* have been a funny prank had
the labs not been switched however............
I can still see the dazed look on the faces of the two seniors whose card
decks were shredded. Not a happy sight.

DRIP BOMBS!!!
Better yet, get some plastic sheeting, build a small fire, and hang a strip
of the plastic around the end of a stick. Now, hold it over the fire and as
it becomes soft, wrap it around the stick by turning the stick. After it's
on there good, set fire to it. Much better than a sandwich bag, and the
right kind of plastic will make a cool whiz noise when the bombs drop.
My pyro friend Kevin and I spent many, many hours of our childhood
destroying his old worn-out plastic toys in this way.

Hands down, the best beer made in America is Hop Devil IPA by Victory
Brewing, Downingtown, PA. My favorite European beer is Saku Pils
from Estonia. Not much of a wine drinker. Coca-Cola and Mountain
Dew are the best soft drinks, although since I don't drink coffee
Jolt Cola is good for those late-night drives home from rock concerts.

Enough to be safe in our homes, jobs, schools, and streets. I don't think
we should pay politicians anything! Why do we let them raise millions of
dollars to run for a job that pays a few $100K/year, and on top of that
keep campaign "war chests"? Let the people who "paid" for them in the
election pay them. (as if they don't already <sigh>)

A room where the air conditioning is cranked too high. Probably because as

"Out there, somewhere..."
> Are you a King fan, Bo?
Yeah, I guess I'll own that. I think "The Stand" is one of the best
books of all time (by any author). I actually broke a date so I could
keep reading that book. It is a true tour de force.
"It" is probably my runner-up favorite. I also liked "Christine" a lot,
and it's also the only King movie I ever thought was worth a flip
because it was almost perfectly true to the original spirit of the book,
IMO. Casting, script, direction--everything was right. The guy who
sold Christine to Arnie in the movie was almost exactly the guy I had
imagined when I read the book--so close it gave me a start.
"The Mist" is my favorite King short story, and "The Library Policeman"
is a close second.
I've been a little disappointed in some of his more recent stuff. I
enjoyed "Insomnia" but I didn't think it was quite up to what he's
capable of. "Gerald's Game" was about a B-.
> What other stuff have you read of his by
> Bachman?
Just "Thinner," I think, which I enjoyed.
I had a good time with "Desperation," so I was anxious to pick up
Bachman's "The Regulators." Yuck. I think it's the only book in the
last ten years or so for which I invoked the "page 80 rule"--if I'm not
into it by page 80, then I obviously have better things to do with my
time. So, I put it down. Never thought I'd do that with Stephen King,
but there it is.
> "Rage" is the best written, I believe,
I'll put that in my pocket for next time I'm at the bookstore. :)

> was (as you say) okay.
I kept thinking he was going to tell us a little more about the society
that bred such an event. We got snatches here and there, and being a
fan of negative utopia fiction I was able to fill in the blanks, but I
wanted to see what King did with it. Oh well.
I finished "The Green Mile" this afternoon. I liked it quite a lot.
> I've read the "Left Behind" series through to the current Apolyon.

A co-worker recommended the series to me, and I bought the first one. I
think I'm going to borrow the rest of them from him (he's already
offered). I had no idea they were $14 apiece--yipes.

I appreciate it. I'm sick to death of spending the money, smelling bad,
feeling bad, and just the general inconvenience of the whole thing. As
I said, I'm working up a nerve to do it. I did quarterly New Year's
resolutions this year, and "stop smoking" drew the third quarter tag.

As a teen (before weedeaters), I used to spash gasoline or tractor fuel
onto our driveway ditch bank beside the culverts. The fuel alone would
kill the grass but left it standing. I used to allow it to soak and
ignite it by thumping a lighting match from about twenty feet away. I
had great fun (Fire! Fire!) doing this because of the pseudo explosion
that occurred. The opposite end of the double culvert would ignite
cannon-style as the vapor collected in the culvert carried the flame
front there. While this was not a true, confined explosion, it never
the less gave the surrounding air enough thump that neighbors sometimes
investigated the noise. Although I swear that I will eventully do the
saucer-cigarette experiment, I was expecting more than a simple burn if
it torches. I will prepare for a saucer rim ejection of flaming fuel.
A note of caution to all readers: When I was about 15 years old, I had
a younger "friend" (read: hanger-on) who spent a few days with me. I
later noted that we had discussed the cigarette-gasoline question. He
and his younger brother died of horrible burns from the "explosion" of a
gasoline can while locked in their utility room. My guess was teen
smoking coupled with the ready availability of gasoline without the good
sense to experiment safely.
Perhaps we need to control gasoline and do background checks of
applicants to purchase. Who knows what todays crazy teens might do with
such a powerful, yet uncontrolled substance. I hear that a gallon of
gasoline is far more powerfull than a semi-automatic handgun!

And yet, as we all know, gas doesn't kill people, people kill people.
It's you anti-gas wackos who want to suppress our whichever-amendment
rights to burn stuff that "burns" me. "Inherently more dangerous"? What
about swimming pools? You want to outlaw them next?
Like the slogan says, "Outlaw gas and only outlaws will be making those
Mad Max movies." (It's not a very witty slogan, but we're a new
organization and our copywriters are still tinkering with it.)

We wouldn't have much to do if we banned everything that's dangerous.
I'm still waiting on your response to ESR's essay, BTW.

And what's the temperature in Hell this morning? Am I under some arcane
obligation to read this essay and then respond to it? I think not. Freedom
of speech - the most important one - allows me the right to keep silent as
well, and this is one of those stupid threads that goes nowhere.
Keep your gun. It just makes me think of you as one of those objects
seen in a rear view mirror: smaller than you appear. But you have
alienable rights to your weaponry as I have to mine.

T - who may be armed and may not be
Well, I wouldn't expect a KKK member to read an essay advertised as
making good points about civil rights or racial equality either.
Everyone is entitled to their beliefs, but it is the obligation of
the educated man to pit his beliefs against all challengers.
Here's one of my favorite quotes from a man for whom I hold a tremendous
amount of respect:
"When you're presented knowledge from the same point of view, that's
an indoctrination. When you're presented knowledge from many
points of view, that's an education." -- Dr. Benton White
: Keep your gun. It just makes me think of you as one of those objects
: seen in a rear view mirror: smaller than you appear. But you have
: alienable rights to your weaponry as I have to mine.
I dare you to try to alienate my from my Second Amendment rights.
Perhaps your slip is showing, Mrs. Freud. Perhaps your emotional
argument would be compelling to some, but I find it on par with
arguments like "I just don't see how someone could look at a sunset
and not know that there is a God (who happens to be the same God as
mine)". I'm glad we're not forced to accept emotional arguments
because we'd be forced to accept "I just don't see how someone could
look at <epithet> and think that they're not inferior to White People
(who happen to hold beliefs that align well with mine)".
The fact that you refuse to even read an essay that presents beliefs
that are different from your own causes me to lose a great deal of
respect for you. Perhaps it is I who sees you in the rear view
mirror.

Cop: I can put you in Queens on the night of the hijacking.
Hockney: Really? I live in Queens. Did you put that together yourself?
