to High School Technical Theater
I have 10+ years' experience teaching technical theatre crews in a
high school - safety, set design & construction, rigging, lighting,
sound, management - and 25+ years' experience "doing" the above for
community and school theatres. I've taught a class in this for 10
years, and had kids graduate from my crews/class and go on to McGill &
Columbia in technical theatre, other colleges to work their crews, and
area/community theatre groups as crew - and they've all been well-
prepared. This is the only class in my district like this. We've had
area pro's come in and they have been impressed with our curriculum.

When I started, there wasn't a specific licensure in this. Now, I'm
told that I need to get a certification. I'm completely striking out
finding anything that isn't another full master's level program.
Anyone have any ideas? I'm in the upper midwest; would prefer a
summer program but a weekends/nights class sequence might be do-able
depending upon where it is.

Thanks!

Mike

Hello Mike,

Who is telling you that you need to get a certification? Is it something that had been mandated or something that you think would be a good idea?

A lot of guys working on Broadway have an ETCP certification which covers Electrical, Theatre Rigging, or Arena Rigging. I don't know if this is what you are looking for. Right now the certification is mandated for a very small number of people in specific venues. Take a look at http://etcp.plasa.org/

I hope this helped.

I also recently designed lighting for a show at Columbia University =)

I imagine you are talking about a teaching certification? If so, then that is something that is handled on a state to state basis. I received mine through an alternative certification program in the state of Texas, and it is an EC-12 Generalist with a content certification in Theatre Arts.

You would be best to contact the state board of educators in your state and inquire about certification programs for those who already hold a degree.

I hope that helps!

Washington (State) has a Certified Technical Educator program. If the
teacher gets that they also get extra funding. One local school has 95
kids in his tech program.
