Homemade stand for ETC 5deg follow spot?

Hello All,
I'm turning a couple of 5deg units into follow spots. City Theatrical
has a nifty stand ($500+) to create a follow spot. I'm going to
experiment with making something in-house. Any suggestions from those
who might have done this?
The main issue being that the 5deg barrel will make the unit front
heavy. One of my colleagues has used ankle weights clipped to the lamp
housing as a counterweight.

Pictures would be terrific if you have any. I'll post a project page
on this once done.
