Hello all,

It's been a while since I've posted.

I've worked with Styrofoam (yes the blue stuff) many times before.
Carving it in to all sorts of things. I've primed it in Kils or other
regular latex based primers... I've even painted it without primer
and, while a bit more challenging... it comes out nice.

I'm told there is a primer (?) called "Foam Coat" (I thought this was
for foam rubber but the person I spoke with tells me there is a "Foam
Coat" for styrofoam.

Does anyone know of this? Where do you get it? Is it worth using?
What's the advantage?

Hi Mark,
http://www.rosco.com/us/scenic/foamcoat.cfm
Cine Services locally probably has it. If not, they should be able to order it. Or any other Rosco dealer.
What are you going for? From the description, this is a hard surface. Do you want a hard surface or something with a little give?

Mark,

We use a homemade version of foam coat here for when we need some extra protection for durability....I give credit to Rob at Dublin Scioto HS for the recipe....It works great for us.

1 gallon latex paint
1 gallon of Vinyl Spackling paste ( we DAP in the red, white, black bucket)
1 gallon of White Glue.

I use lots of styrofoam in our sets....mostly for moldings.  I don't foam coat it or prime it, and haven't had an issue with paint peeling....I do peel off the clear plastic sheet that is stuck to the blue stuff that comes from the Big Box stores on the thinner sheets. And we use the cheapest paint from Lowes.

Another suggestion if someone uses quite a bit of foam...See what company in your area supplies foam to all the contractors doing the synthetic stucco (dryvit) work.  I started buying sheet foam from him for about 1/3 the cost that I payed at Lowes.  And for special stuff, he is great.  He had a run of about 10,000 feet of cornice trim he got stuck with when a contractor backed out of a job.  He sold some to me for 25 cents a foot, foamcoated and primed.  And when I needed a solid 2'x2'x6' block of styro for a statue, he had he ability to take a picture, digitize it, and make 2 profile cuts on it, making the carving a lot easier.

I am not familiar with foam coat but I always use Jaxsan 600 to coat any kind of foam. It comes in brush or trowel grade and gives a durable and flexible surface that takes any kind of paint beautifully. You can get it from Rose Brand or many other suppliers.

Roscoe Foam Coat is a coating that is 'specially formulated for use on
foams. It is meant to be put on in several coats which will give you a
"rock-hard" surface that, supposedly, you can hit with a hammer and not
damage. It has fibers through out which helps get you to this end. It IS
quite tough, and Matte, not shiny at all. A good product made for the
theatre industry.
It is one of a couple of products that can do this. SO, If that kind of
surface is what you want, Go for it!
The other approach is to let the surface be flexible. We have painted
directly on foam rubber, and it is virtually indestructible that way because
it bounces back and so does not dent or does not tear easily.
The Bead or styrofoams are actually very delicate, which is why, even if
paint sticks to them, folks tend to want to coat them with muslin,
cheesecloth or goop, to protect them.

Happy Painting!
