Good Morning Members!
Weather has forced us to abandon Heenan Lake and instigate Plan B
The below suggestions are all California locations AND require a California Fishing License!
Plan B =
Meet at 10 AM at the Mad Dog Cafe located in Woodfords at the intersection of highways 88 & 89. From Mad Dog Cafe we can fish spots along either the East Fork of the Carson River (Hangman’s Bridge, Carson River Resort, Wolf Creek) and West Fork of the Carson River (spots along 88 up to the and within the Hope Valley)
West Fork of Carson River Options (driving west from Mad Dog Cafe along highway 88):
- USGS gauge: 0.5 miles just west of Woodfords off of 88. There is an easy to see graded dirt parking area. The West Fork of the Carson is very close to the parking area. This area is smallish BUT, it has a couple of deep pools, it is protected and is worth an hour of fishing for sure.
- roughly 2 miles west of Woodfords, off of 88, there is an easy to spot bridge that is just off of 88 and blocked off to autos, there is easy parking next to the blocks and fishing in and around this bridge is decent and accessible.
- Hope Valley area, about 5 miles west of Mad Dog, off of 88 and on both east & west sides of 89, the West Carson up here always looks great but today I would suggest a bit of caution due to potential wind rushing through the open Hope Valley
East Fork of the Carson River Options (driving south of Mad Dog Cafe along highway 89):
- South of Woodfords, and just south of Markleeville (roughly 6.5 miles), is Hangman’s Bridge off of 89. There is parking here and a pit toilet and easy access to both sides of the East Carson River
- further south of Hangman’s Bridge, along 89, is the Carson River Resorts. This is one of many places to wet your flies south of Hangman’s Bridge. There are multiple options along 89 as one drives south of Carson River Resorts.
- if you are really adventurous, Wolf Creek Campground, further south of Carson River Resort and south of where 89 turns into 4. 4 eventually gives way to the Wolf Creek Road. Up Wolf Creek Road is the Wolf Creek Campground, the campground is adjacent to Wolf Creek. I have never fished here BUT… it is an option. This is a bit of a drive
Good Luck
