 Dear HSF colleagues,

**please take note of the message below, that was sent out earlier this month. Because I sent it from the wrong account, it didn't make it to all the mailing lists. Apologies for that! I hope you still have time to add your project. **

A happy new year from the gsoc admins! The GSoC program for this year has again been announced (despite it looking a bit shaky last year the program continues without major changes for now), and we'd like to issue a call for mentors. If you would like to mentor a remote student working on an open source software project please e-mail hsf-gso...@googlegroups.com , or directly add your project idea to our homepage (Instructions: https://hepsoftwarefoundation.org/gsoc/guideline.html - you may use previous PRs as a template. Note that we simplified the procedure a bit: you can now just put the mentor information in the yaml metadata, no need to edit a separate list).

Please note that our organization first needs to apply to take part in the program. Although we don't foresee any problems here, it helps to have the projects idea page populated, so please do your best to add your project by Feb 1st.
The timeline for the 2026 program is fairly similar to previous years. Find it here: https://developers.google.com/open-source/gsoc/timeline .

Note also that it is entirely within the GSoC rules to encourage students to apply to your project or do your own outreach - the only thing not permitted is mentors and students to have the same affiliation (from the same university, for example).

Feel free to mail us with any questions, and please also circulate this announcement to interested colleagues.

Hi Ruslan,

that's great to hear! Yes, you are correct, ideally you can do a cp of your md in   _gsocorgs and _gsocprojects from 2025 to 2026 when adding your proposal, then it all shows up correctly and the website can assemble a list of the participating institutions and software projects in 2026. But we'll check that anyway before merging the pr.

Cheers,
Valentin

Dear Valentin,

Thank you for the prompt announcement. Last year I mentored a project and really enjoyed both the process and the outcomes, so I would like to apply again this year.

I would like to clarify the procedure: in the GitHub repository, I see _gsocorgs, _gsocprojects, and _gsocproposals, each organised by year. Do I understand correctly that even if the organisation and project remain the same, they still need to be copied into the 2026 folders? Then, a new proposal should be prepared referencing the organisation and project, meaning that three new files need to be added in total?

Cheers,

Ruslan Mashinistov
