Good Morning Class! I must emphasize at this point that your responses
and level of analysis have been truly thought provoking. We have now
reached the final section of the Summer Assignment which is getting
into reading the textbook we will use throughout the school year. What
we will do in this assignment is what we will do all year long so make
it habit now and it will help you read the text and do well in the
course.
SO far we have focused on America's involvement in the Cold War and
its foreign policy in the aftermath of WWII. We have also studied
America's "race problem" and the attempts of African Americans to gain
access to the American Dream during this same period. In Chapter 39 we
will continue to focus on the domestic (home) side of the Cold War by
looking at the presidency of Richard Nixon (who has to deal with the
Vietnam War, China and a scandal) and his successes and failures.
There is usually an essay question on the AP test about how Nixon
handled domestic and foreign problems so its a good idea to start
here.
As you read Chapter 39 I want you to find 10 (TEN) vocabulary words or
terms (These can be important people, places, events, new political
movements, nicknames, etc.). List these terms along with their
definitions in an email to me at
mgio...@harmonytx.org
Here is an example from the chapter so you know what to look for (by
the way - you can all use this as your #1):
1) The Great Society (page 939): The name of a series of programs by
the presidential administration of Andrew Johnson designed to
eliminate poverty and racial violence.
2) ...
3) ...
You may need to use the computer to look some of these terms up as you
don't have the rest of the book to help you.
During the regular school year you will read approximately 2 chapters
a week - sometimes 3 - other times only 1. Since it is summer you may
have until Friday July 20th.
Remember not to reply here but rather to my email at
mgio...@harmonytx.org
If you have questions post them here so all can see or send me an
email. I will quiz you every Friday on what you have read - so as you
read do not worry about dates, military battles or the super small
details. Think about how events shaped the American people
politically, socially and economically - then think about how those
events shaped or were shaped by our relationships with other
countries. More to come on all of that later.
