Thanks everyone for your suggestions and feedback.
As requested, here are the resources I compiled from your suggestions, and from my colleagues here.
We had someone from the campus activist group come to class today, and students seemed energized.
I can't tell yet how the assignment is going to work out, because I just shared it with students today. I'll let folks know how that goes. The undocumented services coordinator said strongly that she wanted to have students
hear people's Coming Out of the Shadows stories as an option - remember my concern was safety and ethics regarding disclosing one's status. She shared some You Tube clips of Coming Out of the Shadows event. So that's an option, to do a verbatim transcript.
The concern from the director of the Center for Latino and Latin American Studies, who coordinates our Oral History Project, was that this not be too much the 'easy' option. So I made the interviewing load a little lighter
and the transcription of the Coming Out of the Shadows stories a little heftier.
We'll see how it goes.
My colleague also suggested a minimum of 30 minutes for the interview, etc. When I teach this again I think I would make this a little more significant still, and offer more training up front. There was a whole class for the Oral History Project for example, and a whole course on methods. Wondering how they will do with what tools they already have.
