Hello all,

I can’t believe school has already started. I  hope people are finding balance, and reserving time for self-care as we lurch forward toward another school year. I think of this community often, how it sustained me in my journey.

And often we don’t read about activist anthropologists’ social justice journey.

If people have some time, and looking for inspiration or something to share with students as we’re struggling to put our current unease into words, Annals of Anthropological Practice *just* published an interview conducted by my Anthropology and Contemporary World Problems students based on Julie’s book, Seeking Justice in an Energy Sacrifice Zone. Many thanks not only to Julie but to Annals editor John Brett for not only taking a chance on this for the peer review process but his behind-the-scenes work in correcting omissions from the COVID-skeleton production crew.

Anyway it might be worth your read…  https://doi.org/10.1111/napa.12136

Do take good care everyone.

In justice, and solidarity,

Thank you for your message.
I am unavailable to reply at the moment -- immersed in the reality of Santa Cruz mountain fire and related evacuation from my Fall Creek home.
With hopes of better days,
Barbara

Hi Barbara
I was concerned to read about you needing to evacuate from your home due to the Fall Creek fire.  How are you and your family? I know you also had family and friends affected by the COVID virus.  I hope that has abated.   Has the fire been contained?  I look forward to hearing that you have some relief from these serious issues.
Warmly
Sheila

Dear Barbara,

So sorry to learn that you must evacuate your home due to the Santa Cruz fire. I hope you will not lose your home and will keep you in my thoughts and prayers.

Best, Christine Ho

Dear Christine,
Thank you for your kind thoughts. I too hope the home survives in relatively livable condition. Surreal to be in this role after a lifetime of disaster response work from the other end of things.
as ever

Dear Barbara,

Sending you our prayers and healing spirits, too, from the Central Valley...

We are also affected by the fires... Air issues our side, with many losses nearby in the Vacaville area.

We are right below the flight path for the Fire Tankers take-off... One after another for more than a week now...

With Our Prayers,

David

Thanks David! Very much appreciate the thoughts, prayers and shared experience.
After so many decades of pervasive climate change denial I suspect there are few folks who now dismiss the unfolding reality…
Stay safe!

Oh dear. I was afraid of that. A couple other colleagues and family members have also had to evacuate. Wishing you peace and fortitude. Scary times indeed.

Dear David,
I know you are in the thick of things too, especially with smoke/air issues. It must be hard to forget about it when you can hardly breathe and the Fire Tankers keep taking flight. Sending you my prayers too.

Hugs, Christine

Sending love, healing, and safety to all those facing immediate disaster threats, and multiple overlapping pandemics. Barbara, you know you got shelter and a home with us if decide to head south at all! We've had some blue skies peaking out once again here and feels like a whole new world of possibilities...
much love,

Glad you can give Barbara shelter.

The hurricane may go from a Cat 4 to a 5  (3 mph off from being a 5 )
by the time it hits tonight.  The physical destruction will take with it
many small communities that will not be able to come back.  The
environmental disaster may outpace the physical damage-   massive
displacement, not just temporary but permanent.

Thanks so much, Christine...

It is getting a little better... Thanks for asking... We may be able to get out of the house today for the first time since Aug 16.

Look here for California Fires from Space: https://mashable.com/article/california-fires-images-smoke-2020/... We are in Sacramento right in the path of all of the smoke...

Not to mention this, which breaks our hearts: https://www.facebook.com/pebblebeachcalifornia/photos/a.241607596737984/652231315675608/

More has to be done... We can all follow Dolores Huerta's lead....
