Hello Dear Colleagues,  I hope you are doing well and have been able to keep safe and well.  I am wondering who is working on EJ issues in applied anthropology.  Specifically, I have been working with some people trying to draw attention to waste management practices, and their health impacts on the people working there and the communities exposed to incinerators and landfills.  This came up recently due to the waste produced by the COVID-19 pandemic, but extends to much more.
If you by any chance know of anthropologists who are working on these kinds of issues in communities in the US, or what committees or TIGS within SfAA, I would appreciate it if you would let me know.  Thanks so much.

Hi Theodora,

Thanks for your email. I hope it starts a conversation on these issues and how we can address them, as anthropologists and as concerned citizens.

I'm working with several environmental organizations to stop an aging trash incinertor in Hartford, CT and to institute zero waste policies to make incineration unnecessary. I'm located in Eastern CT, where we have the ash landfill for all the trash incinerators in CT. Some of us are also deeply involved with stopping a new gas plant in  Killingly, CT. Both Hartford and Killingly are EJ communities and our CT Zero Waste Coalition is led by the CT Coalition for Environmental and Economic Justice. EJ is central to our efforts.

I'd love to hear about what others are doing. Perhaps there are opportunities to share ideas and amplify each others' work.

Best,
