Help End Slavery in Mauritania!
Mauritania is one of the first countries likely to receive debt relief
under the Cologne Initiative adopted by the G-7 countries last June. The
Cologne Initiative provides relief for debt owed by the poorest
countries to multi-lateral organizations such as the World Bank, the
International Monetary Fund and the Africa Development Bank. Under the
Cologne Initiative countries must adopt a poverty reduction plan to
receive debt relief.
The Africa Fund, a member of the Jubilee 2000/USA, strongly supports
debt relief and cancellation for African countries. We also believe debt
relief must be implemented in a way that promotes poverty reduction. The
continuation of slavery is Mauritania in incompatible with poverty
reduction.
The Africa Fund provides sample letters you can send to Treasury
Secretary Lawrence Summers and your Senator, urging that Mauritania's
Poverty Reduction plan include an effective plan to end slavery and
officially recognize all anti-slavery and human rights organizations so
they can monitor that progress.
