SEEKING 2 VOLUNTEERS TO TEACH ENGLISH - Ivory Coast, W. Africa

Date: September 21, 2000

I am Pierre Niava, a Board Member of the International
Association for Voluntary Effort (IAVE) and the IAVE
Leader in my country, the Ivory Coast, a French-speaking
country.

I am currently managing a Language Institute which
teaches English to French speakers (mainly adult
workers). English becoming more and more a worldwide
communication medium, we are increasing awareness
actions to get people to learn English.

Our immediate need is to get two volunteers, one
male and one female to come and teach English in
our country. Both must be native U.S. citizens and
have experience in teaching. Accommodation is
provided as well as a modest monthly stipend.
Any interested party can contact me for more details.

Sincere greetings,

Pierre NIAVA
Academy International

http://www.iave.org/
http://www.volunteer.nl

......

Editor's note: A working facility in French is no
doubt required; contact Pierre Niava to obtain all details,
if seriously interested.

With just a modicum of digging (i.e., entering into dialogue
with resourceful persons in international organizations), many other
opportunities such as this can be "unearthed."

Should you apply DIRECTLY to the voluntary organization
in Africa, or "thru" an intermediary organization located
in No. America or Europe?

____________________________________________________

There are MANY intermediary organizations similar to SCI (such as
Friends/Quakers, Volunteers for Peace, etc.) through which
one may apply to a project in Africa, thus benefiting in some
cases from any special discount arrangements that the
intermediary organization has worked out with the host organization
in Africa (such as for room and board).

Alternatively, often you may bypass intermediary organizations
(and any deadlines, restrictions, etc., that they have imposed)
and apply DIRECTLY to host organizations in Africa, by writing
to them (by regular mail in addition to E-mail) and requesting
the application, schedule of projects and all details.

VOLU-GHANA

The Voluntary Workcamps Association of Ghana [VOLU - rhymes
with "tofu"] will sponsor approximately 40 voluntary
projects over the next 24 months and is now accepting applications.

Projects last from 1 to 4 weeks (summer or winter) -- HIV/AIDS
educational campaigning in local communities; reforestation;
environment; agriculture; building schools, clinics and libraries;
youth work; teaching/tutoring; women and infants; micro business
development; medicine/health; computer training/repair; distance
education, manual labor. ALL of VOLU's projects will also have
HIV/AIDS education as an important component.

E-mail is less reliable than snail mail. VOLU administrators
are still oriented to conventional modes of communication.
