ACTIVITIES
& SITES:
Urban centers; rural villages; cultural and historical
sites; geographic and natural landmarks; explore
traditional life, linguistic and ethnic diversity;
experience a unique blend of human warmth, vitality
of spirit, and determination; leave the beaten
path to see, feel and appreciate what few tourists ever
would or could.
DURATION:
Programs range from 1 week to 3 weeks, beginning
variously in December, February, June, July & August.
Special programs with particular themes may be arranged.
COST:
Fees start at $995 - we believe the lowest price
anywhere for a program of this scope; includes travel,
accommodations, breakfast & full daily program led by
Prof. Rogers and colleagues.

ACADEMIC
CREDIT:
Students typically arrange with their schools, under
Independent Study or under a faculty advisor, to earn
academic credit -- typically 7 to 12 units.
Also, separately, you may earn 3 units (grad or undergrad
level) credit through AASP's own university affiliation

Focus on GHANA

Arrival at the Airport: JFK
Be patient at the airport. Most likely you will find
yourself joining a mass of people with huge boxes of
materials they are bringing back home for loved ones. After
you experience the check-in procedures, prepare to wait a
while to board the plane. It is our experience that the
earlier you get to the airport and get your self settled,
the happier you will be.
Arrival at the Accra Airport
On arrival at KIA (Kotoka International Airport) in Accra,
the airport check will probably be quite extensive. It will
most likely include a physical inspection of your luggage,
and inoculation record inspection, a visa and passport
inspection, a written declaration of all of the money on
your person, and a long wait. There is a different
conception of time in the country. The synthetic,
electronic automatic era is less of a factor. Things may
not happen as fast as you desire.
Inside the Airport
You might find it helpful to tag your luggage in such a way
to help you recognize it immediately. This will save you
from being caught in the crush of people trying to
distinguish their bags at the luggage carousel. It could take
some time for you to locate your baggage and get through customs.
Traveling in a group, you are less likely to experience the
worse airport hardships.
Outside the Airport
You might find your first encounter outside of the building
to be with a woman asking for donations for a worthy cause,
then, you may find yourself being questioned about
assistance with your luggage. The person asking will expect
to be paid, unless that person is part of the ground
team. We will be sure to have people in plain sight to
assist you through the entire process.
Vaccinations
These vary according to country and region. In the case of
Ghana, only yellow fever shots are required for entry.
You should consult with your physician about cholera,
tetanus, and possibly polio. Also, obtain and use anti-malaria
pills; failure to do so could result in your contracting malaria.
Insect repellant is essential. The mosquitos are numerous,
and can be aggressive as the sun sets.
Food
There will be plenty of rice, yams, black eyed peas, salads,
greens, fish, chicken, beef and plaintain. Nuts and fruits
will almost always be available, including very sweet
bananas, oranges, and pineapples. Beverages will include
local palm wine, Star beer, soft drinks and water. Bottled
spring water will also be available.
You are only allowed to bring one carton of cigarettes into
Ghana. If you are planning to take a travel iron, electric
shaver, etc., remember that the voltage is different and
requires a converter and an appropriate plug.
Bring all of the camera film you will need for the trip,
then bring more than that! Film is available in Ghana, but
it is often very expensive.
Shopping
This is a really wonderful experience, if you have someone
with you who knows how to barter. You might want to bring a
large quantity of t-shirts and pens! They are excellent for
exchanging for African Goods. Also, business cards are
helpful as every child you meet will want your address!
Money
The Official Ghana Homepage has a site that shows the
national currency, the CEDI. Approximately $1.00 American
equals 2,100 cedi. Considering that the average yearly wage
for a Ghanaian working person is less than $700 American
Dollars per year, one can understand better the economic
situation of the Ghanaian people.
Travelers Checks v. American Dollars
While you may be advised to travel with travelers checks,
for security reasons, the exchange rate for travelers checks
is not as good as for American Dollars. Moreover, the larger the
denomination of the bill, the better the exchange rate. The
cash is exchanged at a FEDEX center, of which there are many
in Accra. If you want to use a credit card...it is almost
impossible to do, unless you go to Barclay's Bank, and wait
anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour for an international
exchange.

peoples and societies of Africa, Brazil and Cuba are now akin
to a MOVING TRAIN, and one that is rapidly accelerating.
This is an express line. It will not stop for us to get on
board. We will have to jump on.

destination, and even about ports o' call along the way.
