The Voluntary Workcamps Association of Ghana (or VOLU,
rhymes with "tofu") sponsors a variety of 1 to 3 week
projects, including community development, construction,
reforestation, tree planting, health education,
computer training, farming, and youth work.
Volunteers are encouraged to participate in more than
one project. Held during summer and winter.

Volunteers (students, professionals, academics,
non-students, persons with skills and others, of
all ages) come from all corners of the globe,
including other African countries.

Founded in 1956, VOLU is one of the oldest, most
respected -- and most successful -- service organizations
in Africa devoted to grassroots, self-help, sustainable
community development.

ACADEMIC CREDIT

Volunteers are encouraged to arrange with their faculty
advisor or department to earn academic credit for their
participation. From 7 to 12 units is recommended under
Independent Study or Int'l Experiential Education.
After returning, students may choose write a paper on
a topic of interest, based on their experience.

COSTS

Participants make their own round-trip air arrangements,
and pay a small fee to VOLU to cover room and board
and incidental costs.

This is a HIGHLY RECOMMENDED program. If you are seeking
a "tourist" experience (in airconditioned tour bus or hotel),
please do not apply.

The VOLU experience will challenge you to
participate in African life and to help solve gritty
problems faced by African people.

VOLU is itself a Ghanaian-run organization.
