Dagestan: Police Officer Sentenced to Three Years after Torturing a Teenager

On 12 July 2012, in the court of the village of Khebda, Shamilsky district, Republic of Dagestan, the sentence in the case of the torture of an underage local resident Makhmud Akhmedov was pronounced. Police officer Magomed Magomedov, accused under Art. 286, s. 3, ss. (a) (abuse of power) of the Russian Federation Criminal Code, was sentenced to three years imprisonment in the general regime colony with the deprivation of the right to occupy certain positions for 3 years. An appeal can be lodged within 10 days.

The interests of the victim at the preliminary investigation stage and in court were represented by lawyer Aziz Kurbanov, working under an agreement with Memorial Human Rights Center.

The case of two police officers, Sh. Magomedaliev and G. Nurudinov, who also tortured Akhmedov on 18 July 2010, was allocated to another production. This case is pending.
