I am
feeling like I am in a nightmare; I am in a huge shock to see the death of
Avijit Roy in the newspapers from Bangladesh. I am feeling like I have lost a
real brother. Indeed, he was a more hardworking and knowledgeable brother of
mine in promoting human rights and dignity in the world. His death is like
knocking down a shining star from the sky; it is a huge loss for humanity.
He has
been in the hit list of the Islamic fanatics of Bangladesh for quite some time.
Last time when I communicated with Avijit, I requested him not to go to
Bangladesh. My fear just came true a few hours back. He went to the Ekushe Book
Fair in Dhaka, and was attacked with machetes by Islamic hate-criminals near
the Teachers Students Center of Dhaka University at about 9:30 PM. He sustained
a deep wound to his head and died at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital during
an emergency surgery.
On
behalf myself and on behalf of HRCBM, I am informing this to you with my
deepest sadness. I have to make this message short. I just wrote to Professor
Ajoy Roy, Dr. Avijit Roy’s father, that many people, including myself, are
crying with him for Avijit.
Yours,
Sukhamaya
Bain
