Acronis can create two types of backup archives: (1) file backups (which consist of user-specified files and directories (but not the metadata of the disk or partition)) and (2) full system images (which consist of files, directories and disk metadata). The software can create full disk backup archives of several file systems including: NTFS (Windows); FAT32 (Windows 9x and removable media); Macintoish systems (HFS+ and APFS) and Linux systems (ext2, ext3, ext4; ReiserFS, and Linux Swap).[8][9] Acronis falls back to using sector-by-sector copy when a non-supported filesystem is backed up.[10] Acronis has an agent that can be installed within the operating system, which allows backups to be performed in the background while the computer is being used.
Acronis Cyber Protect Home Office is used by computer technicians to deploy a common system image to a group of computers.[19][23] For example, the preinstallation media of Acronis allows the user to create full disk backup archives of a given system without needing to install the agent on the system being cloned.

Acronis True Image is a software product produced by Acronis that provides data protection for personal users including, backup, archive, access and recovery for Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android operating systems. As disk imaging software, True Image can restore the previously captured image to another disk, replicating the structure and contents to the new disk, also allowing disk cloning and partition resizing, even if the new disk is of a different capacity. The backups are in a proprietary format which saves using a .tib filename format. Acronis was launched in 2003 and in December 2014 claimed to have over 5 million consumer and 500,000 businesses users.
Acronis True Image can make two types of backups: file backup, backing up user-specified files and directories, and full system images, which are exact snapshots of an entire disk partition. The program can back up a system hard drive while the OS is running. Acronis True Image can browse the contents of backups and restore them partially or entirely. It can also mount a disk backup as a virtual disk, readable in the same way as any disk drive.
In addition to backing up supported file systems, Acronis True Image provides raw sector backup and restore options independent of file system, thereby supporting a file system that is corrupt, or not supported. This creates a complete image of all sectors on the partition, whether they contain data or not; the image will not be compressed, and will be the same size as the partition.[10]
Acronis True Image guarantees backward compatibility for image files (with the .tib extension) created with a single previous version, that is, images created with an immediate previous version can be successfully restored (older versions may or may not work). Backups are created to be compatible between different editions of Acronis True Image within the same version (Home, Enterprise), e.g., between former Acronis True Image Echo Workstation and Acronis True Image Echo Enterprise Server, or between Linux and Windows versions.[16] Compatibility is not guaranteed between products that are not within the same version.[17] Guaranteed cross-version compatibility is documented.[12]
In some cases it is possible to extract the .tib file using free offzip utility with commandline "offzip.exe -R -o -a -1 -z 15 ", which produces uncompressed binary image. The command scans all TIB compressed sections and extracts them into one image file.
After significant effort I have recovered the full system but am wondering if I am better off using Acronis, or other backup software, or simply periodically making a mirror image of my C drive on an external disk.
I decided to upgrade to the non-subscription version. No issues, BUT note that if you make full disk/system backups, you can NOT use a recovery disk to recover individual files from such backups if the images were saved in the newer .tibx file format. You can only do so if the image has been saved in the older .tib format. Files can, however, still be recovered from file backups as before.
I also use it whenever I do a Windows reinstall, since I can then access the image as a drive letter once Macrium has been reinstalled on the new system, and then copy files over from the old image to the new installation.
Only the Clone Disk function is available and supported by True Image for Crucial. Other features present in the menus, such as Backup, Sync, and Dashboard, will require updating to an unrestricted Acronis product at
www.acronis.com. After purchasing a license for a full Acronis product, support for these features will be provided by Acronis support.
I am trying to convert a backup of my XP partiton (which was done using Acronis True Image Home 11 release) to a virtual machine. When I browse to the tib image file and click the View Source Details link or click Next, it shows an error message at the top of Converter window stating "The source paramteers are invalid." I thought Acronis True Image 10 and 11 were fully supported and would work? Does anyone have any ideas what I can do to use this image? Do I need to do anything different when creating the image file in Acronis True Image?
I'm trying to use the converter (5.0.0 build 470252) now on an Acronis True Image 11 (Home version) image which is supposedly compatible, but am getting the same "The source parameters are invalid." message that others keep seeing. - FAIL
In the end the only option that worked was the VMware VCenter Converter conversion of the powered on OS. As mentioned above it failed first time, but my guess that was due to some disk issues that were resolved with a CHKDSK run. (Acronis did mention those, but only at the restore stage). The image created by VMware vCenter Converter seems to be solid which is pleasing. The best part of that is that compared to the other processes it was very quick to run (even twice) so that part of the converter gets a thumbs up. After seeing that in action I might avoid using Acronis in future.

Acronis True Image is a program to make disk images. It is made by Acronis. True Image can create an image of a disk while it is running Microsoft Windows or Linux, or offline by booting from CD/DVD, USB flash drives, PXE, or other bootable media. As a disk imaging solution, True Image can restore the previously captured image to another disk, effectively replicating the structure and contents to the new disk, also allowing partition resizing if the new disk is of different capacity.
In addition to the officially supported filesystems, Acronis True Image also provides raw sector backup and restore options for all other filesystems. 'Raw' mode provides support for a file system that is corrupt, or that is not officially supported, by capturing a complete image of all sectors on the disk. This method results in a larger image file as it is not able to compress, resize, or selectively restore files on the unrecognized filesystem.
Step 3. Your Windows operating system information and all system related files and partitions will be automatically selected so you don't need to do any manual selection at this step. Next, you'll need to choose a location to save the system image backup by clicking the illustrated area.
EaseUS Todo Backup is a multi-functional utility for backup and recovery. It can help you to image a hard drive and back up an SSD to an image. Acronis True Image offers an intuitive dashboard. It allows you to create disk images and partial backups, sync your files to other locations, and back up to the cloud (using the Advanced and Premium plans only). Backups can be scheduled to run automatically.
If you are like me you have a few spare USB HDD kicking around. Instead of direct cloning, you can take a drive image to any storage, and the restore that image to the new SSD. Then you don't need to buy anything.
