I've got a Compaq EVO n620c laptop that uses a Centrino Pentium-M CPU
in a Socket 478v2 ZIF.

This same socket is also used for both Core Solo & Core Duo CPUs. Is
it possible to upgrade from a Pentium M to a Core Solo/Duo CPU simply
by changing CPUs? I suspect this is NOT possible, but I'm not certain.
I can't find anyone who has tried such a thing, or says it's not
possible.

The Pentium-M is an SSE2 only CPU not too good for hackintosh, and a
Core Duo/Solo upgrade would be a real improvement if possible?

Socket type is only half the battle. You need to make certain the your
BIOS can handle the new processor, that your DC board can handle the
new draw, that your HSF can handle the new termperature demands, and
that your FSB is compatible with the processor as well.
I learned this the hard way when I was trying to put a 2.8ghz P4HT
processor with the same socket type as a 1.6ghz P4 system. It needed a
different FSB, so it never ran. (Luckily it ran after putting the good
processor back in)

I think it would be a whole lot cheaper just to get a new computer.
upgrading a computer that used to run windows 98 or something is not
really ideal.

The n620c shipped with Windows XP Pro. I got a correct answer to the
upgrade question on another list. I can't use any of the Core Solo/Duo
CPUs, but any of the Pentium-M series that are pin compatible will
work. It appears that I can get a substantially better CPU, a "Dothan"
Pentium-M with 2MB L2 cache and more speed for only about $10. I
suspect this CPU upgrade may improve speed by as much as 50% because
of the combination of doubling the L2 cache size and increasing the
MHz speed by 40%. I can't buy a better laptop for $10. This SSE2
laptop may not be optimum for OS X, but it should run OS X better than
many older Macs. I'm guessing faster than most G4 Powerbooks & iBooks?
I'll do an Xbench score when I get the upgraded CPU and install it.

For comparison, I got an Xbench score of 34.16 on an older yet P-4
Compaq n610c:

The n620c with upgraded CPU will have double the RAM, quadruple the L2
cache, and more MHz on a better CPU than the n610c above. I think I
should expect an Xbench score of around 50? Certainly it should be
within the range of the best aluminum PowerBook G4. It should be able
to run Snow Leopard, which no PPC Mac will ever run. There is Snow
Leopard 10.6.2 with SSE2 support now, but I have no experience with
it. I'll probably try this as soon as I get the upgrade CPU.

I know that my 600mhz P4m Dell Latitude D600 (600mhz forced, 1.4ghz
normally) with 384mb of ram runs about 25 times faster than my G3 iMac
with 512mb of ram. It's just known that a x86 will be much faster than
a PPC mac on almost everything.
