Police moving the body of Fred Hampton Bullet holes on the door of Hampton's apartment.

In 1968, Fred Hampton was 22 years old and was leader of the Chicago Black Panther Party when he was murdered by police officers in his apartment at 2337 W. Monroe.

Though very young, he was considered both one of the most charismatic leaders and one of the best strategic minds in the civil rights movement..

Over 5,000 people attended Hampton’s funeral where Reverends Ralph Abernathy and Jesse Jackson spoke.

I remember this too. One of my roommates was dating a law student who was working on the case to see what really went down. He was working with a group of civil rights lawyers. They went over the scene and were digging bullets out of the walls, if I remember correctly.

In December 1969 as I was getting my doctorate degree, I was a part of the group of Panther supporters that went to the house of the killing. It affected me so much that when I receive my degree i loudly announced that I was receiving it in the name of the black panther party and the Vietnam freedom fighters.
