CHPV -- my weekend wish was to send an upbeat Holiday Greeting to my vintage Villagers before Santa (often disguised as Jay Mulberry) closes the google/group he brought to our chimney eight years ago. But nothing I could find seemed suitable until --
Hidden in an old file drawer I discovered a handwritten note from one of my children. It was dated 1990 and said, "Not all my childhood memories of Christmas are pleasant ones: heightened expectation can turned into dashed hopes. But one in particular shines brightly.
"Mother somehow got hold of a huge box, perhaps a neighbor's new refrigerator. She wrestled it up the stairs and early Christmas morning my two sisters, my little brother, and I piled inside -- still wearing our stripped pajamas. Mother closed the top tying a hug red-ribbon bow; then called in our father.
"I remember exactly what it felt like waiting, crammed in the dark with a mass of warm giggly, wiggly ones. The whole box shook with glee, suspence and excitement. We heard father tugging at the ribbon, to exclaim, "My goodness, what can this be ?" The lid popped off and we all sprang out shouting 'it's us ! It's us !' ".
Big box full of joy, for all us.
And may it be forever so.
