Garuda Mall evicts the poor from their land
I witnessed 6000 people being thrown out of their homes in Ejipura, Bangalore to make way for a new shopping mall.
The land was originally allocated to build houses for the poorer sections of society. But the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has entered into a contract with the owners of Garuda Mall (Maverick Holdings and Investments) to build a commercial complex and a housing complex.
Pending Lokayukta Inquiry This deal was alleged to be illegal and the Lokayukta has been conducting an enquiry. I am shocked at how 1500 houses can be demolished even as this enquiry is still going on against this project.
As owners of the popular Garuda mall in Bangalore, Maverick Holdings has a responsibility towards its customers and the citizens of Bangalore to follow ethical practices. That’s why I started a petition on Change.org asking Maverick Holdings to step out of this atrocious deal.
Families at Risk The residents have been on the road since the incident. Many of them have lost their jobs as a result of being away from work, guarding their possessions on the road. Many children have not been able to attend school.
If enough of us sign the petition, we can tell Maverick Holdings that we do not want a shopping complex in Bangalore built on land meant for the poor.
Sign my petition asking Maverick holdings to voluntarily step out of this atrocious deal with BBMP and cancel the agreement to build a commercial complex on this land.
Thanks for taking action,
