Hi. I'm a naturopathic doctor in Portland, Oregon, USA. My clinic is
offering five-day colon health retreats for people with ulcerative
colitis and other conditions starting in January. The retreat
includes five days of in-patient fecal microbiota transplantation
(FMT), aka fecal transplant. We administer the pre-screened donor
stool via enema and provide food and lodging, as well as genetically
profiling your and your donor's colon flora and administering
naturopathic therapies. Our baseline price for the retreat is $3,500.

I only hesitantly prescribe antibiotics for certain people with IBD--
in my opinion, that hasn't been clearly demonstrated to make the
procedure more effective, and antibiotics carry other sets of risks.
In addition, I am not delivering FMT by colonoscopy at this time.
Patients undergo FMT via enema for five consecutive days, and receive
either acupuncture or abdominal massage on each day, as well as
receiving appropriate pharmaceutical, herbal, and mind/body medicines.

Check out fecalmicrobiotatransplantation.com (or the easier-to-
remember probioticinfusion.com) for more information.

This is a subject I have a lot of passion for, and I hope I can be of
service.

Dear Mark

Unfortunately I am noine the US and so to come to you would be
difficult but I am very pleased to hear that you are doing FMT as the
more places that do it the more it will be accepted and the
knowledgeable we will become.

What I would like to ask you is have you treated may people thus far
and for what conditions and what sort of results have you achieved?

I would also like to politely suggest that maybe you should consider
calling FMT by a more familiar name becuase this type of therapy is
already called by several different names and I feel that it would be
a good idea to have some sort of consistency so everybody begins to
know what it means.

Steve

Hi Steve,
There are a lot of names for it--the docs who have the most
experience doing it got together this year, and they decided as a
group that the official name should be fecal microbiota
bacteriotherapy, or FMT. Here's the paper they wrote if you're
interested: http://www.cghjournal.org/article/S1542-3565(11)00891-3/fulltext
So far, I've overseen one patient through two treatments, for
ulcerative colitis. The first was a failure, and the second a
success. For the second one we instituted a retreat-like environment
in her home, which is what inspired me to set up these retreats.
Best wishes,
Mark

Hi Mark

Thanks for the response and thanks also for the paper, it is very
interesting. I now know to call it FMT and I am very pleased to hear
that there is now a consensus with regards to the name. I am very
pleased to hear that you had success with the UC patient and I hope
that you have continued success because it is about time people had a
new and successful treatment option. I would very much like to keep
abreast of how your treatment retreats go so is there a way I could
keep updated? I could give you my email address if that helps.
Regards
Steve
