Hi,

Does anyone use Spelling Workout and can give me thoughts on it? I need a spelling program for my 5th grader who I used to think was a natural speller. Not so much anymore. I think we need a good systematic approach. And I don't want to spend much at this point. I love the idea of it being in workbook format because she does like the independence of being able to go off and do her work herself. BUT I was also looking at something like Spelling Wisdom (from Simply Charlotte Mason) or the ancient Simply Spelling that both incorporate dictation. That's a skill I want to add back in daily.

I do own the first couple of books in the Megawords series and I like them, but I think I need to remediate on some rules first. It assumes we already know that and we don't. So I'll keep that and get back to it after we hit the basics for a while. We pulled her from public school mid-3rd grade and I think she missed some of those rules in my attempt to get other subjects off the ground and thinking she was a better speller than she is.

And, please don't tell me to look at or buy All About Spelling. ;oP I have looked at it and don't care to spend that right now! Thanks though.

I use Modern Curriculum Press, but I test them on the lesson first to find the words they can't spell.  I write only those words at the top of a notebook page, and then they write each word three times a day.  If their test score isn't very high, they write the words four or five times a day (or more if needed). Any words they miss on the test go on the next week's spelling list.  Words they miss in their daily writing assignments also go in the spelling list. I hope this helps!

I just purchased an interesting workbook and companion guide that you might take a look at. It is actually more for me than for my kids. It is called "How to Teach Any Child to Spell" by Gayle Graham and there is a workbook called "Tricks of the Trade". I realized when I started home schooling my kids this year that I am a sight reader (I didn't have phonics in grammar school). When I studied more about this I also learned that most kids who are sight readers don't start having problems until about 4th grade when more challenging words get harder to recognize. I was looking for something that would review the basics but also highlight the more important spelling rules. She has a section called "Rules Worth Remembering". I obviously didn't remember many of these :) I just got the books the other day so I have not started incorporating them or finished reading through them. You are welcome to see them if interested. Also, I have been using Spelling Workout with my 7 year-old. She has done workbook A, B and is now on C. I like them but I think you have to make sure to focus enough time on the tip for each lesson so they really learn the rules and are not just memorizing a list of 10 words each day.
