Thanks for sending these posts. Laurie.

I’m wondering if plans are being made for a section meet-up in Atlanta for those of us involved with HP. I’d like to meet in person, but would could do remote if necessary.

Greetings, HP Folk,

Here's the link to the program on "Next Generation Artisans in the Traditional Building Trades" that I curated for the 2025 Smithsonian Folklife Festival's Youth and the Future of Culture theme. The program featured a range of preservation craftspeople (both mentors and youth learners) and initiatives, including the National Trust for Historic Preservation's HOPE Crew (Hands on Preservation Experience), the National Park Service Historic Preservation Training Center's Traditional Trades Advancement Program, the Campaign for Historic Trades, the American College of the Building Arts, Mount Vernon's preservation carpenters, the New Orleans Master Crafts Guild, and more.

Skilled craftspeople in the traditional building trades play a vital role in preserving our nation’s built environment and cultural heritage. Through their knowledge and skill, their creativity and care, they help communities preserve historic places that hold memories, meaning, history, and identity. They create sustainable new architectural works of beauty and excellence that enrich us all ...
Here's a link to a Festival blog on preservation/restoration work underway at Washington National Cathedral and George Washington's Mount Vernon:
On August 23, 2011, a 5.8-magnitude earthquake emanating from central Virginia shook Washington, D.C., and much of the Mid-Atlantic region. Earthquakes are rare in the D.C. area, and this was a big one. My friends and family can all remember where they were when it happened. Just recently, it came up in my family’s group chat, and my brother recalled the way the framed photos on his bedroom ...

And an article about traditional trades training at the American College of the Building Arts:
At the 2025 Folklife Festival, Markus Damwerth, chair of architectural carpentry at the American College of the Building Arts, and Phillip Smith, professor of classical architecture and design, collaborate to display blueprints for new buildings currently undergoing construction in Charleston, South Carolina. For ACBA’s professors and students, the structures we are surrounded by—in ...
Happy last days of summer to everyone@!

I’m looking forward to our AFS meeting in Atlanta. I’m hoping we can continue to make more connections to Historic Preservation within folklore. On Saturday, I Zoomed into the meeting of the Folklore & History Section of AFS. Simon Bronner chaired the meeting, and a number of others were attending via the internet. There’s a lot of interest in making more connections between HP and their section. Jason Baird Jackson was part of the session, and he’s really supportive of furthering the conversations.

I’m part of a forum on performance theory, so I’m not part of a session that deals with HP this year. Is anyone on this list involved with HP-related sessions in Atlanta?
