I just fired up the app on the iPad for the first time, and the app
was downloading thousands of notifications. I just assumed old
notifications were deleted either when deleted via the app, or after a
certain period of time on the server end of things.

Can you clarify how this works? I have no need for all these old
notifications to be retained.

Stubs for old notifications are retained to sync deletes across devices. There is no need for these events to be replayed on brand new devices, but at the moment the initial sync is no different from any other, so deletes are not ignored. The whole notifications isn't downloaded or stored on your iPad, just the ID along with an indicator that the notification has been deleted.

The correct thing to do would be to only get the minimal set of current notifications, but this currently isn't implemented.

Hope that clears things up.

Ah good to know. I had sync issues with a previous release and when I
saw all these downloading notifications, I thought all were just
sitting there on the server. All seems to be working fine now.
