Hi

We are looking to create a "category mapping" between our sites
categories and your categories.

Is it possible to get a list of the categories along with their ID's

This way we can place the videos in the correct category on our site.

Thanks.

Hi Bukisa,

Thanks for the inquiry. Are you looking for IDs for our entire
category taxonomy? There's quite a few (1.5k+) so perhaps just the top
level (25 categories) would be enough?

Hi Russ,

Thanks for the quick response.

We would just want to make the category the most appropiate as
possible.

I see you have 3 levels of categories (based on the submission form)
we could do with just the first 2 levels.

Also does your API always return the complete "tree" of 3 levels ?

<category-hierarchy>
<category id="193">Cars &amp; Transportation</category>
<category id="214" parent_id="193">Car Maintenance &amp;
Repair</category>
<category id="216" parent_id="214">Car Cleaning &amp;
Detailing</category>
</category-hierarchy>

For example we could just jump straight to the second level and grab
that ID and use that based on the mapping

Also an unrelated question - I see you provide the FLV file of the
movie - so we could technically use the video in our branded player
(as we saw some of your other partners doing)

It appears as <filename>/system/videos/6570/6570.flv</filename>

So would the full path be http://www.howcast.com/system/videos/6570/6570.flv
or could it be something else sometimes?

Thanks,

Simon, Bukisa.com

Hi Simon,

The APIs will return the full tree for the category. There will always
be at least two levels of categorization and typically up to three or
four (there are some cases where there are more). Our taxonomy is
constantly changing based on user feedback, our own thoughts on better
organizing content, etc. so we're a little concerned about the best
way to provide the list as it'll evolve. We'll discuss this a bit and
get back to you on that.

In terms of using our FLVs, you're free to embed our player, but our
policy doesn't allow you to serve the FLVs directly in your branded
player. We have many partnerships that leverage our embedded player
and we've signed several distribution deals where we upload a video to
another site through various means which plays in that site's branded
player (i.e. in this case they are not using our FLVs). If you'd like
to discuss this more, let's take it offline and we can put you in
touch with our business development team.

Thanks,
- Russ

Thanks Russ,

I'll discuss the issues of the FLV with Alex from BizDev

With regards to the tree of 2 levels - could we receive that ?

Thanks

Hi Simon,

We discussed the category list more and will provide an API for it
over the next week. We'll respond to this thread and update the API
doc as soon as it's live.

Thanks,
- Russ
