Hi Eileen -
Genealogy is a great excuse to be stuck at the computer for so long! :-)
To get right to the answer, the best sources for me have varied based on what it is I'm searching for and for which Orcutt branch. There's no question that the richest sources have some from, as Judy even suggested, finding the original documents. Six years ago, for example, before our first child was born, I took my wife on a vacation to Maine and carved out some time to do onsite searches in Penobscot and Hancock counties - looking through small, local libraries and the old cemeteries in the area. There's so much available in these small libraries that is not available online or anywhere else! I've found that local residents generally would jot down what they had and then submit it to the local librarian for safe keeping, and since it's not published, there's no record of it anywhere else.
Our Orcutt lines converge with Emerson and Jane Hardison Orcutt. My branch is through Daniel Webster Orcutt, the son born right before your Mary Orcutt who married Isaiah Nickerson - and that would be the one place we differ based on your earlier email to Judy. I show Mary Ann Orcutt as the daughter of Emerson and Jane Fletcher, not Seth and Annie Fletcher. Given her birth date (Jul 1811), it would have been impossible for Seth and Annie to have both her and William (b. Mar 1811).
Anway, I have a bunch of info and would be happy to help however I can. Look forward to hearing from you.
Matt

I am forwarding this to save time since I have been working at the computer since about 8:00 AM yesterday and it will soon be a 24 hour streech. I am trying to get as much done on my tree as possible before I leave on a three week family history tour. Anyway, I wanted to follow through with what Judy suggested and contact you about my quest for finding all the descendents of all my immigrant ancestors along with their story. Right now I am concentrating on my Orcutt line. The original email at the bottom explains it in more detail. To answer what Judy asked, I am looking for advice on which sources of the many out there are the most accurate and how can I get access to them. I am on a limited budget and am disabled. The Internet and my computer have been a life saver for me, and I count myself lucky to be disabled because it allows me the time to devote to my quest. I am also excited that more and more images and transcripts are being made available on the Internet, but in some ways, it makes it more confusing because its like trying to get a drink at the water fountain and getting Niagra Falls instead. Although I have been researching for years, particularly my husband's lines, I am quite new to researching the Orcutt line.I am also quite interested in learning the history and background of as many as I can. For instance, the catalyst for starting my swim in the Orcutt waters was trying to put together a brief history for my mother's parents who both died when my mother was only three years old. I wanted to create a memorial on Find A Grave for them as I had done for my father's parents. I have experienced my heart being turned to each of the people I am working with to gather their story. And, no, I am not just talking about the living that I am working WITH. Those who have gone on before are constantly here helping me to find them. Perhaps you have experienced the same sensations. They are each a part of me, they are not just empty statistics or data.Thank you so very much for your help. If there is anything I can do for you in return, I would be glad to do it.Eileen Hacking Lentz----- Forwarded Message ----

Hello Eileen,
Thanks for your message! It's always good to hear from other Orcutt researchers.
I don't know if you've made contact with Matthew Getz yet -- as you may know, he is compiling a data base on ALL Orcutts. He descends also from the Thomas 2 Orcutt line, including Emerson 4 Orcutt and Ann Mansell -- the line from Thomas that moved to Maine. Matthew would be an excellent person for you to contact -- I know no one who has as much Orcutt knowledge as he does.
I don't know if you are interested in personal information on the ancestors beyond compiling the lists of descendants -- but two years ago (this was after I'd compiled the chapter on Thomas 2 on the Skjelver website) I finally tracked down Thomas 2 Orcutt's death -- in Boston, in 1749 -- Thomas 3 was administrator of his estate, and I have a copy of that estate administration which I located in Boston in November, 2005. He had also married again, so Jane Emerson Orcutt had died by May 15, 1744 -- there had been confusion as to which Thomas Orcutt married Margaret Ray Sutton on that date -- turns out (from deeds and other records) that it was Thomas 2 who married her, not Thomas 3 Orcutt. (Thomas 3 was still married to Thankful Jenkins of Hingham well after 1744, according to deeds in both their names). I have the listing of his estate in 1749 -- he died a fairly wealthy man! I'm still working on how that developed -- think it has to do with perhaps having gone into b! usiness with one or both sons-in-law who'd moved their families to Boston. At any rate, that chapter now has a complete re-write with a good bit of new information. I'm no longer posting the information I continue to find on the internet -- same reasons you don't want to get involved in Wm. 1 Orcutt's origins. (You may be interested -- there is a new theory now about how William 1 Orcutt may have gotten to Massachusetts -- perhaps as one among 2 separate shiploads of Scottish prisoners-of-war unloaded in Boston in 1651 and 1652 -- from the battles of Dunbar and Worcester, respectively -- and were indentured. Diane Rappaport is doing extensive work on the Scottish prisoners, and thinks this is reasonable to consider -- at least two known Scots prisoners wound up in Hingham also.)
There's also a slight correction to be made on the marriage date for William 1 Orcutt and Mary Martha Lane -- December 24, 1663, not January 24, 1664 (people have been misreading Rev. Peter Hobart's journal, which is a bit tricky in following his method of dating events). Small change, but a definite one. (Neither William Orcutt or Mary Martha Lane are named in that journal -- simply "Andrew Lanes Daughter Maryed" on that date. The identifications are made in the 1675 document in which Lane children and sons-in-law turn the estate to Lane's widow.)
It really helps to get to original documents! They get miscopied so frequently. It's easy to understand how that happens, but can still be frustrating.
What sorts of information on resources -- and for whom -- are you interested in? I'm not sure if what I'm telling you so far is of value to you. Glad to help if I can. You and I descend from the same Orcutt line through Emerson 3 Orcutt and Mary Gardiner. I descend from their son Elijah 4 Orcutt who remaining in Abington, MA, whereas you do from Emerson 5 who moved to Maine.

I have been working on trying to fill in the descendants of all my immigrant ancestor as well as finding as much of the family story as I can. I am working through several venues -- one being contributing family memorials on Find A Grave. This week I contributed Howard Edwin Small (my mother's father) to Bucksport Hillside Cemetery in Hancock County Maine. As I was verifying that I had the right cemetery (four Hillside Cemeteries are listed for Hancock County) I made contact with a possible Orcutt relative. This caused me to concentrate on my Orcutt line this week and I found a lot, including your work at http://www.skjelver.us/genealogy/orcutt.html, and the posts you have on Gen Forum. I noticed on one you stated that you are a descendant of Thomas Orcutt, son of William Orcutt and Mary Martha Lane. This is also my line.
My parents are Laurel Maud Small and Kenneth Elbert Hacking
Daughter of Howard Edwin Small and Janet Beatrice Giberson
Son of William Lois Small and Maud Faustenia Hapworth
Daughter of Horatio Southgate Hapworth and Henrietta Godfrey Nickerson
Daughter of Isaiah Nickerson Jr. and Mary Ann Orcutt
Daughter of Seth Orcutt and Ann Fletcher
Son of Emerson Orcutt (Senator) and Ann Mansell
Son of Emerson Orcutt and Mary Gardner
Son of Thomas Orcutt and Jane Emerson
Son of William Orcutt and Mary/Martha Lane
My sister, Janet, has done extensive research to take some of our lines back to early centuries AD, but in the last few years she has been concentrating on the females' lines--much as you have been doing. Sometimes Janet and my goals converge, as in this case. Therefore, I want to share this info with her too. I think I want to stay away from the controversy about William Orcutt's origins--Janet is the one with the expertise and background to ferret out those questions. I want to concentrate on the descendants.
To help me make connections, I have created a public family tree on Ancestry.com in the name of my father, which includes all family connections I can find for all of my ancestors and their spouses families. Because I am also concentrating on documenting and verifying the information, I have been editing each individual in the tree. This may be time consuming, but I am hoping that it also means it is more accurate. As I attach lines from OWT, I find a lot of errors and faulty connections, so I need good resources to correct them and fill in the blanks. I am hoping you will be able to share with me some of those resources. If you would like an invitation to the Kenneth Elbert Hacking Family Tree, just let me know.
