This scholarly biographical monograph explores the life, scientific achievements, and enduring legacy of George R. Carruthers (1939–2020), the pioneering astrophysicist and inventor who developed the first far-ultraviolet camera/spectrograph deployed on the Moon during the Apollo 16 mission.
We are honored that David H. DeVorkin, PhD, Emeritus Senior Curator of the History of Astronomy and Space Sciences at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, will join us to present a special 40 minute video program on the life and work of Dr. Carruthers, followed by discussion with participants.
We are also pleased that Stephan R. McCandliss, PhD, of Johns Hopkins University will discuss his research in ultraviolet astronomy and the continuing scientific legacy of Carruthers’s pioneering work in far-ultraviolet astrophysics.
Diane McDevitt, granddaughter of Philip Francis Nowlan, creator of Buck Rogers, will join us to discuss how Nowlan’s visionary character inspired generations of scientists, including Dr. Carruthers.
David H. Levy, DAS Poet Laureate, will open the evening with a poetic reflection — a reminder that as light travels through time and the universe, so too does verse.
Members of the National Society of Black Physicists have been invited to participate, along with members of the Carruthers Geocorona Observatory team.
Barrye Brown, Curator at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, and her colleagues have also been invited to join the meeting. The Schomburg holds a significant Carruthers portrait collection.
