Hi,

I will be your host for the next Members-Only Star Party at Alpha Ridge
Park on Saturday, Oct 18th;  As usual it will
officially start at sunset and run until 11pm, or later if things are
going well.  The 10-day forecast at Weather Underground is expecting
partly cloudy skies, but perhaps things will turn around as we approach the weekend.

Here is some information for planning purposes:

Sunset:  6:24pm
Moon Phase:  Waning Crescent

I hope the weather cooperates and that many HAL members will come
together for a pleasant night of observing and sharing knowledge. Should the weather not improve and precipitation is forecasted, we will send an announcement at least 4 hours before sunset to update of potential cancellation.

If you're not a member of HAL, but would like to attend, you can become
a member at our website, https://howardastro.org/.  Navigate to
Membership --> Join HAL for details.  Annual dues are a reasonable $25
for an individual, or $30 for a family membership, payable by PayPal or
credit card, or you can do it the old-fashioned way of sending a check
via USPS.  We'd love to have you as a member!

See you Saturday!

Jared

Members-Only Star Party — October 18, 2025

What a perfect night for stargazing! Temperatures were comfortable, and the skies started out beautifully clear. A few high clouds drifted through around 10 PM, but by 11 they had moved on, leaving us with crisp, transparent skies once again.

We had a fantastic turnout with about 20 members joining in. The observing field was filled with a great mix of gear — from Dobsonians and refractors for visual observing to astrophotography setups running SeeStars, NINA-controlled Newtonians, and refractors.

Alpha Ridge Park offered excellent conditions for mid-October. Cool, calm air and a gentle breeze made for near-ideal observing weather, with daytime highs in the mid-60s °F and evening temperatures settling into the low 50s.

Popular targets for the night included:

  • SWAN Comet

  • Helix Nebula

  • Heart Nebula

  • Andromeda Galaxy

A big thank-you to everyone who came out and made the evening such a success! We wrapped up around 11:30 PM as folks packed up their gear after a great night under the stars.
