FROM MARY WEBB, DELAWARE ASTRONOMICAL SOCIETY

You and your guests are cordially invited to attend the Delaware Astronomical Society Library Book Club for our May meeting on

Thursday, May 28, 2026
7:00 PM Eastern Time
Via Zoom

We will discuss:

From the Laboratory to the Moon: The Quiet Genius of George R. Carruthers
by David H. DeVorkin

A scholarly biographical monograph exploring the life, work, and scientific legacy of George R. Carruthers (1939–2020).

George R. Carruthers was a pioneering astrophysicist and inventor who developed the first far-ultraviolet camera/spectrograph deployed on the Moon during the Apollo 16 mission. His groundbreaking work revealed the Earth’s geocorona and opened new windows on the interstellar medium and Earth’s upper atmosphere.

David H. DeVorkin, PhD, Emeritus Senior Curator of the History of Astronomy and Space Sciences at the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum, will join us for our discussion and will present a PowerPoint featuring video clips of Dr. Carruthers.

Members of the National Society of Black Physicists have been invited to participate.
