Hello everyone,

On behalf of the Howard Astronomical League (HAL), I'm excited to invite you to our April Public Star Party this Saturday, April 25, at Alpha Ridge Park! This free, family-friendly event is open to all ages and everyone is welcome.

Event Details:

Date: Saturday, April 25 2026

Time: Starting at dusk (8:23 PM)

Location: Alpha Ridge Park in Mariottsville, MD

Hosts: David Stein and Chris Miskiewicz

Observatory operator: Hannah Broder

What to Expect:

If the skies are clear 😀:

At dusk, the waxing gibbous Moon will be high in the sky, with dramatic views as the Sun rises over Mare Imbrium. Venus will be shining brightly 18° above the western horizon. Jupiter will be high in the western sky with all four Galilean moons visible in a line on one side of the planet, which is an unusual and cool view. As it gets fully dark around 9:30 PM there will be views of galaxies such as Messier 81 and Messier 82 (a pair something like the Milky Way and Andromeda) and the Leo Triplet (Messier 65 and 66 and NGC 3628), nebulae such as the Owl Nebula (Messier 97), and star clusters such as the Beehive Cluster (Messier 44).  Our observatory will be open with live views on a large screen, plus telescopes set up outside for hands-on viewing.

If it’s cloudy ☹️:

We’ll still host an open house at the observatory. You’ll have a chance to see our telescopes, chat with us about astronomy, and learn more about HAL.

We hope for clear skies and look forward to seeing many of you there for a night of stargazing and discovery!

Clear skies,

David

Well, it looks like it's going to be raining tomorrow night.  However, we will still have an open house at HALO, so if anyone wants to drop by and talk about astronomy or HAL we'll be there.  However, we might not stay as late as 11 PM if we're just hanging around by ourselves.

Hi David,

Neither Arjun or I will be the public star party tonight because of the weather (rain).
