Hi all,

I will be hosting the HAL Members-Only Star Party at Alpha Ridge Park on Saturday, September 5th.  It will start at sunset (7:31 PM) and last until 11:00 PM, or possibly later if conditions permit and things are going well.

The NWS forecast shows 37% cloud cover all evening, with a temperature of 80 degrees at sunset, dropping to about 70 degrees by 11:00, and light winds.  The Astrospheric extended forecast shows mostly clear skies until 11:00, so hopefully that forecast will be the accurate one.  I'll send out additional reminders with updated weather forecasts later this week.

Moonlight will not be an issue, as the moon doesn't rise until 1:06 AM.  The skies will be fully dark at the end of astronomical twilight at 9:04 PM.

Fingers crossed that  the skies will be clearer than the current NWS forecast and that many HAL members will gather for a pleasant night of observing, imaging and astronomical socializing.

Hope to see you out there at Alpha Ridge on Saturday night!

Correction:  the NWS forecast shows 26% coud cover on Saturday evening.  I was mistakenly looking at the forecast for Friday night.  Things are looking better already!

Hi all,

Just a quick reminder of the HAL members star party Saturday night.  The weather forecast is about the same:  Astrospheric has mostly clear skies until 11:00 and the NWS is forecasting about 25% cloud coverage.  Fingers crossed that it will improve some over the next three days!

Hope to see many HAL members out at Alpha Ridge on Saturday night.

Hi all,

Unfortunately, the weather forecasts for tonight have taken a turn for the worse.  Astrospheric, NWS and Clear Outside are all showing 40% cloud cover or more until 11:00, with clearing after midnight, but I probably won't want to wait around that long.  The forecast outlier is the Weather Channel, which is continuing to show 20-25% sky coverage all evening.

I'm planning to arrive a little after sunset (7:31 PM) , hopeful that conditions will be better than expected.  Astrospheric is showing Alpha Ridge on the northeastern edge of a mass of clouds that will be moving southward later at night, so maybe the sky to the NE will have some visibility.  There are many fine open clusters in that region (M39, M52, M103, NGC 7380, NGC 7789, NGC 457, Double Cluster) and some great nebulae for imaging (Wizard, Elephant Trunk, Bubble, Heart & Soul).  The forecast was bad for the last members star party that I hosted in March, but the clouds cleared out an hour or so after sunset.  Maybe it'll turn out like that again!  Stranger things have happened.

I'll be there today! It seems like it will clear up after 11, which is not the best but I am testing stuff tonight so it should be fine for that.
