Hi everyone,
I just discovered HAL and missed last night’s event — I’m hoping to learn more about how things work for members.

I’m looking for a good spot to bring my telescope and stargaze after dark. If I join HAL, would I be able to come more often or access member-only observing nights? Also, for the family membership, does that apply only to household members, or could I bring a small group (like a carload of guests) to share the experience?

I’m especially hoping to find a good viewing location for the planetary alignment in February 2026. If anything is being planned for that, I’d love to know.
Thanks so much for any guidance!
Warmly,
Ashley

Hi Ashley,

Yes, if you join HAL and sign up for our impromptu mailing list, you'll be notified when we open Alpha Ridge Park on clear nights for members-only observing. The family membership applies only to your family, but if you occasionally want to bring a few guests, that is allowed, provided that you serve as their host and they observe with you.

The idea is that at our public star parties, we encourage visitors to look through every telescope that’s set up (or view the image being taken if it’s an astrophotography rig) and not be shy about doing so — that’s what we’re there for. However, our members-only events are intended for members to pursue their own astronomy projects without interruption. So, as long as your guests are quietly observing with you, we won’t mind.

We don’t have a special event planned for February, but if there’s a clear night and not too much snow on the ground, I’m sure we’ll have an impromptu observing event.

Clear skies,
David
