saturday brevet

[Bob Riggs]

This Saturday is our July nighttime brevet. We start at 6:00 PM at
the closed Royal Primary School at 7th and Cooper in Brookshire.
Registration will be from 5:15-5:45. Please try to arrive early so we
can all leave together.

We will be riding the Anderson route. I've posted the tentative cue
sheet under the Files section. Be aware that there will likely be no
stores open except in Navasota, at mile 55 and 73, so be prepared to
ride several hours without services.

ASAP so I can bring enough cards for everyone.

This month has been tight, 10 days in Colorado for the BTC plus mnt
evans as a warm up (14.1K feet) and going back thurs for the triple by
pass ride. Have a safe and enjoyable ride. Craig

Love's Truck Stop on FM 2920 at 290 in Waller is open 24 hours 7 days.

Water, on mitchell rd, around mile marker 31 going up(before nelson rd), there is a water outlet on north side of rd about 10 feet off of the road. it is to the left of the gate that is goes to a horse farm. is is hard to see because it is hidden by crept myrtles, YOU need to find it on the way up while it is still light. because it will be too hard to see in the night. the water tastes good. the horse farm maanger does not mind cyclists using the water, we have used it for a rest stop in the area.

By the way, I noticed that last year all riders rode together, is that

Ken, Nope, i was going to ride and test out my new light and hub generator, but we are going to Austin this afternoon, to watch the grandson. i really have not done any distance longer that 70 miles since i did the 200 km in january. i would be slower than usual. i did the nightime one 2 years ago. really nice compared to the heat of the day.

Good, I'm not sure my lighting is that good for a solo venture into
the middle of nowhere.

In case any of tonight's riders are watching the board this afternoon,
I drove the route this morning. Here is what I found:

Roads are in good shape except a couple of minor problems:

1. On 362 at about mile 9, there is a stretch of about 1 mile where
the right side of the road is under construction. It's definitely
rideable, but kind of rough. It only affects outbound riders -
construction is complete on the other side of the road.
2. Highway 105 on the way into Navasota has new chip seal and no
stripes. The road is plenty wide, but watch for cars drifting into
the shoulder area.

Also, here's the scoop on water and services.

1. Prairie View is pretty hurting for a college town. There is a
store at 1098 & Hempstead (mile 23.4), but it's kind of scummy
looking. It was closed when I went by at 8 AM, but some people
outside were waiting for it to open. I don't know what time it
closes. There is also fried chicken place at 1098 & 290. I don't
know what time it closes either.
2. I found the faucet Daniel mentioned at mile 31 on Mitchell Rd.
It's next to a driveway catercorner to the intersection with Nelson
Rd. It's hard to see even in daylight, because it's under some
bushes. Look for a white PVC pipe coming out of the ground about 5
feet to the left of the driveway gate. It had a hose and sprinkler
attached this morning, but Daniel called the manager and he said we
could just unscrew the hose if we need to use it.
3. There is a church in Reid's Prairie on the right just after the
turn back onto 362 (mile 37.4). I found a faucet and hose around
back, but it's kind of muddy back there and liable to be full of
mosquitoes in the evening.
4. There is a store in Whitehall (mile 44). It closes at 7:30, but
the lady inside told me we are welcome to use the faucet around back.
It's easy to get to and right on the corner.
