Prairie Plots at Rice University

Saturday, December 6, 8am-12pm at Rice University (map).

Summer and fall brought us a lot of growth and change at Prairie Plots. Our new management strategy that we implemented earlier this year (see drawing below) included combining some of the original 20’ x 20’ squares, reducing the number of pathways, and cover cropping and solarizing two large L-shaped sections for reseeding and replanting. Join us to prep for the upcoming winter season and to collect seeds for your own gardens and landscapes.

The community work day will take place on December 6, 8am-12pm. Volunteers are welcome to join at any time for any amount of time. Our major tasks will include:

  • Planting two large sections of the plots

  • Cutting back and mulching dead plant material

  • Cover cropping for the winter

  • Seed collecting!

Gloves and limited tools are provided; your own tools are welcome. Volunteers should dress appropriately for outdoor work including proper footwear and sun protection. Please also bring your own water bottle. For parking information, please click here.

More information about Prairie Plots can be found at our website.
